Unable to browse XP MCE2005 via Network?

Hi there,

I have a home network with up to 6 PC/laptop/storage .devices present at any
one time running various OS from W2K, XP Pro, MCE2005, Vista, WHS, embedded
XP and even a LanManager one!

Obviously all belong to the same workgroup and the IP address range is from
the same scope & subnet identical. There is also a password set on all
machines.

I have no problem browsing the shared resources from any PC to any other PC
including from the MCE2005 machine to any other PC...except I cannot view
the resources on the MCE 2005 PC from anywhere!

This originally belonged to a different workgroup but I have since changed
it to be the same as all the other PC's on my network.

With the MCE box I can browse resources on the other PC's, access the
Internet, share printers and even logon to the MCE box using Remote Desktop
from any other PC on my network but I cannot browse the resources on the MCE
box from any other PC.

When I attempt to view the MCE box via My Network Places on my W2K PC I
originally got the error "Incorrect password or unknown username for: \\PC"
despite putting in the correct name/password the Enter Network Password box
keeps appearing.

If I try from another XP PC I get the same box but I am unable to type the
Username as the box is ghosted with \\PC\Guest\ in the username space. The
Guest account is not active on the MCE box.

Just lately the error message has changed to read "Logon failure: the user
has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer"

I have tried disabling NAV2008 to no avail.

I have checked Administrative Tools/Local Security Policy/User Rights
Assignment/Access this computer from the network and made sure
Administrators, Everyone, Users, etc. are listed.

What is causing this and how can I overcome it please?

It's driving me mad! ;^)

First, NAV2008 would still be blocking the system access even if you
disble it. You will need to turn off "Internet Worm" module since it
behaves just like "most" spftware firewalls.

The error message "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the
requested logon type at this computer" indicates a problem with
network permissions on the MCE box. To fix it:

1. Click Start > Run, type "secpol.msc" in the box, and click OK.

2. Click Local Policies.

3. Click User Rights Assignment.

4. Click "Access this computer from the network" and make sure that
the Everyone group is included.

5. Click "Deny access to this computer from the network" and make sure
that the Everyone group is NOT included.

Thanks very much for the replies guys...

smlunatick: I do go through the options and switch all of the options off,
Auto-Protect, Internet Worm Protection, Spyware Protection etc.
Interestingly even before I installed NAV2008 I had this problem...

Steve, Already been there...done that...;^)

I have a horrible feeling the only way will be to re-install from scratch
and see what happens then <sigh>

I wish there was an easy fix...

Check both of those user rights again, as well as the membership of
the Everyone group. Try explicitly adding users to the "Access this
computer" right.

Make sure that the Guest account is enabled for access over the
network:

net user guest /active:yes
