Unable to follow hyper-links ( I believe that is the correct term)

I have Posted this before on June 7th & did not get any
useful response I have since used both Spy search &
Destroy & AdAware to try to eliminate spyware as a
cause. I have run these several times, but the problem
still exists. I changed to the ENIGMA browser, but the
problem is still there.

I am using Windows 98 and IE 6.0.

The Problem is stated below

Very often I am unable to follow links on the internet.
The Browser does NOT GO to the Link from a Web Page. I
usually hear a low pop type of sound, but nothing
happens. I have to resort to copying the shortcut (
desired web site address ) andpasting this into the
webbrowser address window, then hitting GO. recently I
encountered SEVERAL situations where even this work-around
did not work

What is causing the problem that nessitates these extra
steps? How can this problem be permanently overcome and
corrected?

This has been going on for sometime. I have been putting
up with it, but the annoyance and growing extra time is
cause to seek a permanent solution. There are
several other similar problems which I will address
seperately, because they may or maynot be related. But
together they are causing a significant waste of resources
& my time.

I hope that this is the correct forum to seek an
appropriate solution. I have never used this before.
Please advise me if I have the wrong forum.

Thank you!

We need some more information... first, I want you to
make sure your status bar is turned on in IE

(Click View > Status bar make sure that it's checked)

Then, go to a link that "does not work" and put your
cursor over the link. Then right click on the link and
click "copy shortcut" and then paste that shortcut into a
reply on this newsgroup.
