Unable to extract from zipped folders

I have downloaded some zipped files and cannot extract them. In the past,
when going to extract, there would be an .exe icon, whereas now, there is an
icon similar to that of the winzip icon. I am not computer savvy by any
means, I only download files from one site to enhance my Sims2 game. There
were no problems in the past, but since the change in icon, nothing will
unzip. It's probably a very simple explanation, but I haven't a clue where
to start, so here I am. Any ideas?
 
Thanks Dennis but I already tried WinRar and a couple of other extracting
vehicles. and I have the same problem with all of them
 
I guess I would go back to the source and find out how they were compressed?
Are they worth the trouble?
Can you unzip other files?
