A user has a system that is unable to download files using http. If I go to
http://google.toolbar.com and click on dowload toolbar, a file download
dialog should open to download the file "googletoolbarinstaller.exe";
however, the browser just goes to a blank page with a single icon (the same
icon that is used to represent a missing jpg file in a web page). Also, if
I try to go to Cnet's download.com and try to download a file, the browser
goes to a page that states "dowload in progress"; however, the file download
dialog never pops up. I have also tried tucows and many other sites to
download the files that I want; however, it will not work on this system. I
am able to download files using the FTP protocol in IE. For example, I am
able to download files from "ftp://ftp.symantec.com with no problem.
The OS is Win 98 and the browser is IE6 SP1. This system did have many
malware infections, and the above problem was not the original symptom.
Originally, the performance was very poor. I have run cwshredder, ad-aware,
and spybot S&D, using the latest versions with the most recent updates. I
installed these programs from a tools CD that I carry with me. I ran a
repair and then a full uninstall and reinstall of IE6 SP1, and the problem
still persists. I can work around this problem by downloading files on
another system and transfering via CD. However, other files may need to be
downloaded in the future.
