Been there, done that - turned out the casing was faulty (mine was a
generic model, too. Turned out to be the 3rd one returned in 2 weeks -
my wholesaler discontinued business with that supplier)

Should work auto with XP - no drivers required

Does it work at another computer?

yeah, tried it on other pcs as well.... they all seems to work, it was
working well on my old desktop.

Damn! I hate it when that happens ... :)

(Sorry for the bleedin' obvious, but ....) Try something else in the
USB ports - they work?

Does the xtnl drive have its own power - somethimes the power from USB
connection alone is not sufficient (I've got a little 40Gb portable
HDD - it works on some laptops just through USB, but others have to
have the additional power USB conection for it to "register".

checked the USB, all workign well, and the HD is on external power, which is
also plugged in....

Try a thumb drive and see if that conks out before finishing a copy of a 150 MB
folder (or even a 30 MB folder!) from the computer Hard Drive at USB 2.0 speed.
I blame Win XP updates from late last year, and there is still no damn solution
this year.

i have been usign a thumb drive regularly, and no problems at all.
is it possible to undo an update?

you can show the updates in add/remove programs, I don't think it's all of
them but I also don't recommend removing them at all.

well, i suppose removing the updates is not an option, plus i have no idea
which update is the culprit. i have tried everythign i could think of, still
nothign works.
would a new casing solve the problem?

There were two updates from mid-December, that if uninstalled, seem to alleviate
the problem, but there is too much residue from the updates to actually FIX the
USB 2.0 problem. Kinda like Norton, you need some kind of uninstall patch to fix
the damage even if you do uninstall the updates. I don't remember the update
numbers at this moment, since the affected computer is in another abode.

i disabled USB2 controlled though Device Manager. it was then able to detect
the external hd but a "code 10" error came up. Device could not start.

is there any USB 2.0 driver that could fix this problem?

You bring up a good question. Welcome to "Stumpsville".
Anybody besides me wanna answer this one?
I betcha there are plenty of Event Errors to be found concerning your external
HDD (Event 51, among a half a dozen of others, repeated endlessly.)
Too bad the Errors won't lead us any closer to a resolution of your problems.
The errors are a symptom of a bigger undefined problem. Thanks M$!

| i came across this solution from
| http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Q_20790258.html
|
| i manage to uninstall the driver and detect my HD, but it only works once.
| after i unplug the HD and try to reconnect again, same problems occurs.
| seems like windows is only able to detect the HD on the first time it is
| plugged in.

You're getting warm!

Still too much work involved for a plug and play device.
it is just ridiculous
you reckon if i got a new external casing, the same problem will still
persist?

I'm still reckoning. Welcome to the sidelines of the USB 2.0 Reckoning Club.
Keep pumping the crowd for answers.
