Unable to connect through LAN

D

Dave

I have 2 computers (both Win XP SP2) on a LAN, and each with a
modem. I had one set up to act as the host so either could connect to the
ISP through it. That system worked OK For other reasons, I changed that
setup temporarily, but now I would like to go back to it.

I had a similar post recently because I could not 'repair' the LAN. That
has now been resolved thanks to Jack of this newsgroup.

To save myself, I cannot get the original setup to work. I have tried about
every combination of creating new connection, change settings, etc. I can
find. Obviously I have not tried the CORRECT combination yet. What to do?

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
Thx
Dave

You don't give enough information about how you have your "LAN"
configured. Guessing, it sounds as if you have an Ethernet cable
connected between the 2 computers and you want use the modem on one of
them (*only* one of them) to connect to the Internet and allow the
second computer to access the Internet through the first one.

If that's correct, you need to set up Internet Connection Sharing. See
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networksetupwiz.htm
(ignore the steps about creating the floppy disk; you don't need it
because you have Win XP).

Adding to lem advise, does the Host computer having two Nic (Network
Interface Card) to be able to share the Internet.
Also, how much speed (in kb) your Dial up connection?

Here are some steps to perform and hopefully you will get Internet Connection
sharing up and running:
How to set up a ICS:
Hardware:
- Tow Computers
- The Host have Two NICs
- Cross-Over cable (if you will not use a hub with 10base-T/100base-T,
cat5, patch cable)
- Client have a NIC installed and all TCP/IP, DNS configured to get the
IP Auto.
- Enabling the ICS on both the Host and the Client

1 - How to set the Host:
You need to set the Host first as the Host will play the Distributor Role in
the ICS so you need to
set up correctly to allow ICS;

Click Start >> Control Panel >> Network and internet connections >> Network
Connections then Right click My network paces
and select Properties.
Here you should see or have two internet connection one for your Internet
connection and one for your local Area Network (LAN).
Right click Internet Connection and select properties.
On the Properties Window click on Advanced Tab and check these boxes:
Internet Connection Sharing:
[ ] Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet
Connection

Click [OK] to Confirm your settings and close the Internet connection Window.

2 - Setting up the Client:
The same Go to the Control panel and Network Connections >> here at least
you should have one Internet connection Icon or Service
Installed, if not then your NIC or hardware not installed and you need to
install it configure it.
On the Local Area Network Right click and select properties.
Under general tab Highlight the Internet Protocol and click properties.

* Client for Microsoft Networks
* Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) 9If you don't have those then install
them)
Make sure the Machine getting an Automatic IP, DNS then click Advanced and
make sure also that there is not an old settings and all the DNS, WINS IP
filtering are all empty and there are no entries.

It appears as if you have both computers with active dial-up
connections. You don't want to have the dial-up connection on "david."

You don't seem to have ICS enabled on "Alysanne." Did you run the

Deleted all connections - we'll start over. LAN shows as
connected/firewalled on both comps. Network Places are correctly displayed
on both.
You don't seem to have ICS enabled on "Alysanne." Did you run the Network

Did that, all indications seem correct -

computer"?

Yes . But when I open this connection it connects through David, and shows
connected on David. It does not show as connected on Alysanne - which is
the desired ultimate goal.

I am unable to ping Alysanne from David. Shouldn't I be able to do this?

We had this set up for years, with little difficulty. David is recovering
from having to replace the bootable HD - a real mess, but this point just
does not seem to want to get repaired.

Would appreciate any further suggestions.

Open Network Connections on Alysanne (Control Panel > Network Connections)

Right-click on the icon for the Dial-up Connection. This probably is
under the category "Broadband" with the name of your ISP (RickNet?).
Click the "Advanced" tab. The top section deals with Windows Firewall.
You should have this "on". The bottom section deals with Internet
Connection Sharing. At least the top box ("Allow other network users to
connect ...") should be checked.

After you confirm that the ICS box is checked and OK your way out of
this dialog, open a Command Prompt window and run ipconfig /all

Under "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection", you should see the
values IP address = 192.168.0.1 and Subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Do you
see these values?

FYI - When it's working, ICS forces the IP address of the LAN adapter in
the "host" computer to 192.168.0.1. The LAN adapter in the "client"
computer should be set to obtain an IP address automatically. Part of
ICS will assign an IP address to the client computer's LAN adapter in
the range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254.

Right now, with the values you reported, you have the two computers
connected in what's called "ad hoc" network mode, using Windows'
"Automatic Private IP Addressing" (APIPA) scheme. This permits the two
computers to share files, which is why your "Network Places" seems to
work, but it doesn't connect the local network (the 2 computers) to the
dial-up connection.
Thank you for getting back to me Lem - I am truly lost -

You don't want to have the dial-up connection on "David."

Deleted all connections - we'll start over. LAN shows as

You don't seem to have ICS enabled on "Alysanne." Did you run the Network
Setup Wizard on Alysanne and check the box to indicate "This computer
connects directly to the Internet"? After you saw the screen with the
Workgroup name, you should have seen a summary screen listing the various
settings. Did that screen show that Internet connection sharing was
enabled? and that the firewall was enabled?

Did that, all indications seem correct -

Yes . But when I open this connection it connects through David, and shows
connected on David. It does not show as connected on Alysanne - which is
the desired ultimate goal.

You don't have to open any connection if pcAlysanne is running ICS. It
should all be transparent.

After you have ensured that pcAlysanne has a static address of
192.168.0.1 all as per Lem's instructions, reboot pcDavid so that it
is automatically reconfigured with a new ip address, gateway etc. by
Alysanne. Then without opening any connection you should automatically
have Internet access.

The part that puzzles me is this two active dial up networking
connections. What exactly is your setup here. Have you got two phone
lines one for each pc? Or did you do the ipconfig /all at different
times?

Bear in mind that once ICS is correctly installed on pcAlysanne,
pcDavid will continue to share that Internet connection ONLY until
something causes the direct dial connection on pcDavid to come up.

On Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections
ensure that "never dial a connection" is selected or if you don't need
the direct connection anymore then delete it.

If you want to get Internet access through pcAlysanne while pcDavid is
connected directly to somewhere else on other business, then you need
to edit the advanced tcp/ip properties of the dial up networking
connection on pcDavid and uncheck the box which says "use default
gateway on remote network".

All this remains guesswork because you still haven't described in
enough detail your network setup or what you are trying to accomplish
by having two dialups.

Right-click on the icon for the Dial-up Connection. This probably is under

have this "on". The bottom section deals with Internet Connection Sharing.

be checked.

After you confirm that the ICS box is checked and OK your way out of this
dialog, open a Command Prompt window and run ipconfig /all

Under "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection", you should see the values
IP address = 192.168.0.1 and Subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Do you see these

FYI - When it's working, ICS forces the IP address of the LAN adapter in
the "host" computer to 192.168.0.1. The LAN adapter in the "client"
computer should be set to obtain an IP address automatically. Part of ICS
will assign an IP address to the client computer's LAN adapter in the

Right now, with the values you reported, you have the two computers

You're almost there!

On David, go to Network Connections, right click on the icon for your
Local Area Connection and select Properties. On the "General" tab that
opens, select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the "Properties"
button. Select the radio buttons to "Obtain an IP address automatically"
and "Obtain DNS server address automatically." OK your way out. You may
need to reboot David, but then you should be good to go.

You don't give enough information about how you have your "LAN"
configured. Guessing, it sounds as if you have an Ethernet cable
connected between the 2 computers and you want use the modem on one
of them (*only* one of them) to connect to the Internet and allow
the second computer to access the Internet through the first one.

If that's correct, you need to set up Internet Connection Sharing.
See
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networksetupwiz.htm
(ignore the steps about creating the floppy disk; you don't need it
because you have Win XP).

Thank you for daring to enter into this mess -
1) At the expense of repeating myself, let me list a few givens:
2) 2 WinXP SP2 machines, each with a modem & appropriate hardware,
connected by an Ethernet cable
3) Each computer connects to one ISP on the same phone line but separate
accounts
4) We have had the ALYSANNE/Host DAVID/Client setup for years
5) ALYSANNE had 1 direct/shared connection to the ISP
6) DAVID had 2 connections set up, one directly to the ISP, the other
through ALYSANNE via the LAN. Obviously, only one could be used at any one
time.

In case you are wondering why this setup, it has to do with network
printers/copiers/etc., and some limitations on ALYSANNE's ability to move
around physically.

I believe the most important point here is this setup worked for years. We
changed it to try out other arrangements, which did not work pout, so we
tried to change it back. That was about 2 weeks ago, and here we are.

I am sure you're beginning to see what you are dealing with here, but we're
trying. If we are leaving out vital information, or being redundant, it is
not intentional.

At one point , we could not get the LAN to 'Repair' Lem got us past that.
He has also been very helpful narrowing things down. Unfortunately, we have
not quite done the right thing yet, I guess.

At this point, the question is how can DAVID make a ISP connection (using
ALYSANNE's modem, not DAVID's) which will also come up as a connection on
ALYSANNE? Since this whole business started, that has yet to occur
(although, again, it was that way for years.)?

Thanks again

Both pcDAVID and pcALYSANNE should both show two network connections.
One for the LAN and one for the respective direct dial up.

At this point, the question is how can DAVID make a ISP connection (using
ALYSANNE's modem, not DAVID's) which will also come up as a connection on
ALYSANNE? Since this whole business started, that has yet to occur
(although, again, it was that way for years.)?

First things first. After you have installed ICS on the pcAlysanne and
it's address is 192.168.0.1, when you reboot pcDavid it should also
have an address 192.168.0.x (from pcAlysanne by dhcp)

Your last ipconfig post showed that pcDavid was still auto configuring
itself with a apipa address (169.254.xxx.xxx) signifying a broken LAN
connection. This is the first issue to clear up.

Having established a working LAN connection when both pc's are on
subnet 192.168.0.0/24 you can move onto the sharing problem.

This is a good guide to setting up manually on pcAlysanne
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/serverdialup.htm

In particular, note this screen
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/serverdialup/ics_serverdialup03.gif
If the dial up Internet connection on pcAlysanne is not already up and
you want to control it from pcDavid then you need to check all the ics
boxes.

Once you have done this, operationally on pcDavid you don't have to
click on any connection. Just open up a web page or check your email
and the rest should be done by pcAlysanne.

Lem - let me report back on this - see ***** below
Lem said:
Open Network Connections on Alysanne (Control Panel > Network
Connections)

**********YES

************* But still no joy om the connect thru Alysanne

It appears as if you have both computers with active dial-up
connections. You don't want to have the dial-up connection on "David."
Deleted all connections - we'll start over. LAN shows as
connected/firewalled on both comps. Network Places are correctly
displayed on both.

You don't seem to have ICS enabled on "Alysanne." Did you run the
Network Setup Wizard on Alysanne and check the box to indicate "This
computer connects directly to the Internet"? After you saw the screen
with the Workgroup name, you should have seen a summary screen listing
the various settings. Did that screen show that Internet connection
sharing was enabled? and that the firewall was enabled?
Did that, all indications seem correct -

Did you run the Network Setup Wizard on David and check the box to
indicate "This computer connects to the Internet through another
computer"?
Yes . But when I open this connection it connects through David, and
shows connected on David. It does not show as connected on Alysanne -
which is the desired ultimate goal.

I am unable to ping Alysanne from David. Shouldn't I be able to do
this?

We had this set up for years, with little difficulty. David is
recovering from having to replace the bootable HD - a real mess, but
this point just does not seem to want to get repaired.

Would appreciate any further suggestions.
