Unable to concurrently open shared database from Vista machines

An Access 2000 database located on a network share can be opened
simultaneously from machines running XP and Office 2000 with no issues. If
the database is open on any machine, regardless of OS, and an attempt is made
to open it from a machine running Vista Business, the spinner is displayed
for a short while and then nothing. There are no entries in the event log
and I am unable to determine what is actually going on.

Just an editorial to MS: Why did you release an OS that has so many issues
with even your own software? Instead of improving user experience you've
accomplished the opposite...

Does this happen to just Vista Business or also if the second machine is on
XP? If it happens to all machines, I'd suspect a permissions issue where all
users don't have full permissions to the folder holding the database file.

It only happens on Vista machines. We have been in a mixed environment of
W2k and XP for years with no issues. The Vista machines arrived last week,
and here I am...

Is anybody able to help me with this? I have a client waiting to use their
new machines, but they can;t until this is resolved...
