Unable to clear history

Hi,
I am using IE 6.0.2800.1106. I am unable to clear History
using Tool->Internet Options->Clear History.
Moreover, _mostly_ when open a new web page I get the
message:
"The page cannot be displayed"
I am able to view the page once I hit refresh.
Searched for posts with similar problems, but was not able
to find one.
Can anyone help me out.

See if this will help. Delete the folder and the Index, a new one will be
started.
