Unable to choose recipients in WINMAIL

B

bnmohan via WindowsKB.com

Hi!
I have not heard of any fix. I dont even know where to listen. I uninstalled
all Updates from latest to KB933928 (I know that blasted fix by heart!), and
set Windows Update to manually update, and have not updated Windows since. I
wait for Service Pack 1. But I do hope that fixes the issue : else we will
not even have the option of uninstalling KB933928!

Windows Vista Premium is fine otherwise: except that the Roxio that came with
my Dell has problems.

For unexplained reasons, when I attempt to create new mail and click on "TO",
I get the "unable to choose recipients" message. I think this is similar to
the issue others are discussing in this thread. If I understand correctly,
some people are having success removing certain windows updates, although I
have no idea how to attempt that. I have a vista sidebar gadget that shows
my contact list and I can still click on that and have an email message
window pop up with the contact in it. I would like to fix it possible since
I really like having the contact list on my desktop and it only works with
windows mail. I'm using vista home premium and my anti-virus protection is
McAfee. Any help, in "moron" understandable terms, would be appreciated. If
I have to choose an alternate email program, I have Outlook installed with my
Office suite, or should I just opt for windows live mail? Thanks in Advance.

The most likely culprit for this problem is your McAfee antivirus.
Over time, some antivirus programs tend to cause corruption
in Windows Mail. Windows Mail is not compatible with most
McAfee and Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, NOT just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like:
AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

Thank you for the reply. I restored vista to an earlier point and it cleared
up the problem. Seems I was more fortunate than most.

That is a temporary solution at best. Whatever caused the problem in
the first place will probably pounce again.

I had this problem earlier and fixed by removing KB933928. Recently, I have
been out of town & on my retrun am having the problem again. I install my
updates manually & KB933928 hasn't been installed. Is there another cause to
this problem? I can't double click on contacts either, to send or obtain
email address. I am limited to finding an old email & replying. I use McAfee
virus protection!

Thanks, Denny

Click on Tools, then Windows Contacts, then right click in the empty
space on the right side of this window, then click on Customize this
folder, then the triangle, then Contacts, then Apply, then OK, then
the X at the top right of the contacts window. Restart Windows
Mail.

Then, when in the new message window, don't type any part of
the address you want to select. Instead, click on To:.

If this doesn't fix your problem, continue below:

Most versions of the McAfee antivirus program and most versions of the
Norton antivirus program tend to cause various problems in Windows
Mail, although seldom immediately. A recent version of the Trend
antivirus program also causes various problems in Windows Mail.
All of these programs must be uninstalled, not just be partly or
completely disabled, to stop them from creating new problems. For the
McAfee program, you often then need to run this cleanup program, to
take care of what the uninstall left behind.

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may even need to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and create the account again.

If this fixes your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems in Windows Mail.
I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom
install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.

Rather than uninstall McAfee, I went into Security Center & disabled the
Email Scanning. I then rebooted and was able to choose my email recipients

Hopefully this may help someone else with the same problem. I still haven't

Let's hope your partial fix lasts, but from similar reports I have seen,
I think your problem will return in time.

I had the problem since Apr. 9, I deleted all the updates since then but
still cannot solve the problem. I deleted the updat KB933928 in 2007 and it
work, but not this time.
But the way, my 2000 Outlook already cannot use the Contacts of the address
book. Will it solve the problem if I upgrade to Office XP or higher? Is the
Office 2000 caused this problem, it seems not many Windows Vista users have
this problem.

From what I've read, only versions 2003 and more recent of Outlook will
run without problems under Vista.

Windows Mail contacts has worked just fine until today, 5/16. I have had the
Google Search bar for over a year and have had Mcafee also. It always worked
when I tried to choose the mail recipient. NOW--NO GO! Just won't work. I
can manually put in an address, but cannot choose and click. I tried all
above listed ideas...Uninstalled KB933928 and KB931768, shut off Mcafee,
removed the Google bar and still just won't work. There must be some other
way to fix this. Any help on this one???

Check if you have the Google Toolbar program installed. If you do,
uninstall
it even if it's what provides the Google Search bar. That program causes
problems in Windows Mail, although a number of other methods of providing
a Google search functions, including the one I have on my home web page,
don't.

For many versions of the McAfee antivirus program, just disabling the
program
seldom helps. You often have to uninstall it instead. You often then need
to
run this cleanup program to take care of what the uninstall leaves behind:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may then need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

Having run a McAfee antivirus program and Windows Mail on the same
machine for over a year without problems doesn't prove much; the
problems McAfee causes in Windows Mail tend to be slow enough
showing up that many people have been able to do it.

For your problem with using contacts, it often helps to start Windows Mail,
then click Tools, then Windows Contacts, then right click in the empty
space under the right end of the toolbar, then click on Customize This
Folder, then the triangle, then Contacts, then Apply, then OK, then close
the contacts window.

If this solves your problems, but leave you with no antivirus program
installed,
you may want a replacement antivirus program that doesn't cause such
problems. Most versions of the Norton antivirus programs and a recent
version of the Trend antivirus program are bad choices; they also cause
problems in Windows Mail, but can be just as slow in causing these problems.
I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom install in which
you tell it to leave out the part that scans email.
