Unable to change files even though permissions enabled

I have a desktop PC and a laptop PC networked together over WiFi, and
I'm experiencing a problem regarding the ability to
rename/write/delete files on the OTHER machine (and sometimes reading
them.) I'm also having a problem with sharing not propagating to some
folders below.

Both machines are running Windows XP Pro with SP1.

Everything was working fine until an hour or so ago - all I can
remember doing that may have messed something up, was enabling or
disabling "Enable Simple File Sharing" in Folder Options on one of the
computers - and then things started to go wrong.

I am able to share folders between the two machines - in this
particular instance I am sharing folders within both machine's "My
Pictures" folders. But, when accessing these folders & their files
from the OTHER machine (over the network) I am unable to rename or
delete these files - even though I have enabled on a folder "Allow
network users to change my files" (Simple File Sharing) or enabled
Permissions For Everyone -> Full Control + Change + Read (when I use
not Simple File Sharing.)

Oddly, as well as not being able to delete or rename some files, some
files I cannot even READ over the network - even though they read OK
on the machine where they live.

BTW, I can rename, delete and view files on the machine on which they
reside with no problems.

(1) What could be happening here, and how can I get back to normality?
i.e. being able to read/delete/rename files on the other machine, when
I allow it, and also having permissions propagate to folders
underneath?

(2) Is there anyway to reset things (permissions, shares etc.) to how
they were when I first installed Windows XP?

If you need any more info, or clarification let me know.

Thanks in advance, Simon.

Disable Simple File Sharing and reboot. Make sure the the Share and
Security permissions are configured the way you want them. On the Security
tab, click the Advanced button and check the box to Allow inheritance.

Thanks for the replies folks.

That partially did the trick - I am able to read files now, but am
still unable to rename or delete files, and still get an "access
denied" message whenever trying to do so.

Following the instructions, here's what I've done so far...

On both machines I disabled Simple File Sharing, and rebooted.

With the machine hosting the files, I right-clicked on the My Pictures
folder,

selected Sharing and Security...

Sharing tab -> enabled "Share this folder"

Permissions button -> Permissions for everyone -> "Full Control /
Change / Read" all checked, then Apply clicked

Security tab -> Advanced button ->

"Inherit from parent the permission entries..."

"Replace permission entries on all child objects..."

both got checked, then Apply clicked

< the machine seemed to be making a lot of changes to file attributes
for a few seconds >

but when I went over to the other machine, I still could not
delete/rename files on the other machine.

(1) So basically, here is what I am trying to achieve (restore to the
way it was) i.e my IDEAL situation:

With any folder, I want to be able (using the Simple File Sharing
interface) to check "Share this folder on the network" and that
happens (and also in doing that it applies to ALL files and folders
within/underneath that folder.) And when I optionally set "Allow
network users to change my files" that happens also (not happening at
the moment.)

(2) The Start -> Help and Support pages don't have much in-depth
information on all the options in Sharing and Security such as
permissions etc. Where can I find a DETAILED explanation of all this
stuff so I can learn for the future?

Have a good weekend,

Simon.

Simon,

are you aware that there are separate permissions for the share?
On the share tab there is also a button for permissions. To
access a file or folder, you need both permissions, the ones
directly on the respective object, that you set, and on top of
that the permissions for the share.

If the latter are insufficient, users will see the share, but
will get an error message when they try to actually access an
object.

If you have the object permissions set properly, you can simply
set the share permissions to Everyone, Full access. This does
not mean that everyone has full access. It only means that the
share permission allows full access, but the object permissions
may not.
