Unable to change color or use other font changes in Word

Up until this morning (5/23/07), after I downloaded recent updates, I was
able to highlight and change font color and underline, etc. in Word. Now I
cannot. Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there help out there?

What version of Word is this?

Is this happening with a particular document, or with all documents?

What happens if you start Word in Safe Mode? Hold down Ctrl as Word is
starting, and click Yes to starting in Safe Mode.
