Unable to burn tracks in iTunes but can thru Windows Explorer 50%

I had been successfully burning tracks in iTunes for several years. I can
still play audio, DVD and import tracks from audio CDs in iTunes, but
recently have been unable to burn. I went through all the troubleshooting
steps advised on the iTunes web page, including ensuring the device mgr
settings are correct. I took my thinkpad to the Apple Store "genius" who went
through similar troubleshooting steps. His conclusion was that was some
setting in Windows that, since I can "read" everything in Itunes but not
"write" is preventing me from writing anything in a non-Windows application.
I have the most current downloads of both Windows XP and iTunes loaded. I
wonder if there was something in a recent update that is causing this.
iTunes says its a Windows issue, please don't tell me it's an iTunes issue.
Many thanks.

I know! I have been through all troubleshooting with iTunes, and since I am
able half the time to burn in Explorer (but only 50% of the time) Apple is
saying that something in XP is preventing burning with any application other
than XP. Please re-read my initial inquiry, or perhaps I was not clear. I'm
asking for trouble shooting assistance in settings in Windows XP that might
be with holding writing capabilities in ANY (in this particular case, iTunes)
non-Windows application.

One more item I want to ask you. How long has this problem been?
Have you tried a system restore for you state that you were able to
burn tracks in the past, a system restore can be done up to 90 days back.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

I'd say I've been beating my head against the wall about 6 months. I have
not tried a system restore but would be willing to "go there," even though
it's longer than the 90 days. I'll do that now and the write back with the
outcome. Maybe it was just something as simple as corrupted file somehwere.
Here goes! Thanks.

Well, that would've been a great suggestion if I hadn't, on a different space
problem, deleted both Quicken and Maxtor applications in the middle of April.
I once again just tried to burn a cd in Explorer. It will move the temp
files of the playlist I want to burn, but when I go to write these files it
says "Please insert a blank cd" when there is already a brand new clean one
in there. I've tried cds from several different mfrs. I'd think it was a
hardware issue with the drive, but I can as I said, play (read) DVD and audio
cds in that same drive. So that makes me think it's not hardware but rather
some command that is keeping the system from seeing that there's a blank cd
when it comes to writing. Could there be something in registration files or
??? Again, thanks for any help you can provide.

Microsoft's CD Writing Wizard will scan your drive before the burn process
begins to ensure there is enough free space on the disc to accommodate all of
the files you want to copy. If during that scan the drive reports that there
is no disc in the drive, you'll get this error. Obviously, if there is no
disc in the drive, simply insert one to resolve the problem. If, however,
you're getting this error when there is a disc inserted, there may be a
problem with your media or the drive itself. Reboot your system and try
another blank CD (or a different brand of blank CD). Also try a different
application to burn the disk, as the utility built-in to Windows isn't the
most powerful tool available. If, no matter what you try, the drive
continually reports that there is no disc available, it may have to be
replaced.
