Hi Everyone,

I have three computers all running Windows XP Pro SP2 and I have configured
all three to run as a workgroup network named "OFFICE". I have ran into some
odd problems when trying to access the shared folder on each of the three
machine. For starter, one of the PC can see and access the shares on the
other two just fine. But when attempting to view workgroup computer within
My Network Places on the other two computer generate an error message.

[Error: The workgroup OFFICE is not accessible. You may not have
permission to access this network resource. Check with the Administrator for
assistant.]

Does anyone have a clues to what is going on? Now I am a pretty experienced
tech and have done this workgroup network configuration for a few client
already and have never ran into this problem. Please advice if you have any
idea where I can start.

Technical Reference: Hardware configuration
(3)Computers = 1/Dell P4 PC, 1/ThinkPad T20 laptop 1/Dell 600 Laptop

(1) Linksys BEFW11S4 v4 w/Firmware update

Is Windows firewall running on these machines and if it is did
you make sure that File and Printer sharing is checked on the
Exceptions page? Do you have a third party firewall running?

Has Simple File sharing been disabled on any of the machines? If
it has you're going to have to add matching user accounts to each
machine.

Can you ping each machine from the others? Is the output from
ipconfig /all what you expected to see? Same workgoup name, same
subnet mask, same default gateway, same IP range?

Hi Nepatsfan,

Sorry I forgot about those details. Here is what I know. The information
is lenghthy so please have patience with me :-) And thanks for helping out!

On the Dell PC, the one that can see both laptop, I can ping all connected
devices. This computer were assigned the first DCHP address 192.168.1.100
It is running Windows XP Pro SP2 with Firewall turned off.

On the Dell Laptop you can access internet just fine. I can ping the
router 192.168.1.1, and ping yahoo.com, but cannot ping any of the private
192.168.1.xxx addresses. Same problem with the other laptop. My first
initial guess was the router. My client just bought it from COMPUSA.

Furthermore, during the setup of this office network I uses the Network
Setup Wizard. I select the option that stated that "This computer connect to
the internet directly or a network hub". Provide a computer name, and
workgroup. At a few steps later, I selected to enabled File and Print
Sharing.

This is the same steps I did for my home network, with 5 computers, and all
works fine. I can actively ping all connected devices from any of the
computer. And my shares across the network work without any errors.

I like to hear your comments after reading all this information.

Don't apologize for the length. The more details the better.

For instance, it would be helpful to know exactly how the laptops
are connected to the network.
The Linksys BEFW11S4 is a wireless router with 4 wired ports. Are
all the machines using Ethernet cables to connect to the router?

Do either of the laptops have built-in wireless capability?
Are the laptops using a wireless connection?

If so, did you run the Wireless Network Setup Wizard in Control
Panel on each of the laptops?
Do the wireless devices use the same SSID name as the router? The
router has a default SSID of "linksys".
If your running a wireless network, did you set up WEP
encryption?

What's the output when you run ipconfig /all on the laptops? Are
the IP's on the laptops 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.102 with a
subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of
192.168.1.1? Same workgroup name?

Check the Windows Firewall. See if File and Printer Sharing is in
fact enabled.

My experience is that while the Network Connections Wizards built
into Windows have improved with each different version, I still
feel better setting things up manually. At least then you have
some idea what settings you're using.

Keep us posted if you make progress.

You should have told the NetWiz that you get to the web via a
Residential Gateway, since that is M$'s phrase for a router.
(If you crawl around the pages of your router, you will see that
it defaults to Gateway mode.)
