unable to boot. PLEASE HELP!

i turned on my laptop and instead of it booting up like
it normally does, it went directly to this error message:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not
start successfully. A recent hardware or software change
might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted
unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect
your files and folders, choose Last Known Good
Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that
worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a
power failure or because the Power or Reset button was
pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem,
choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings
that worked)
Start Windows Normally"

I have not installed any new hardware or software onto my
computer, and when I shut it down the time before I got
this error message, it shut down with no problems. I
tried to boot up Windows in each possible mode, and it
starts booting up, and the computer is thinking, but then
it just gets stuck and never gets past the black screen
to the window with all my icons, etc. When I try to start
in safe mode, it gets stuck at the following line:
"mulit(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32
\Drivers\Mup.sys"

It has been suggested to me that I need to reinstall
Windows, but that by reinstalling I will lose all my
files. As I am in grad school and everything I need is on
my computer (with no backups)...this would be absolutely
disastrous. Can anyone help me boot up my computer
without losing everything??

The reinstall in this case is a "Repair" install. However, you
need a Windows XP CD to do that. If your notebook is a
Dell, HP or Toshiba then it probably came to you only with
a Recovery disk. Do not use any Recovery disk or it will
wipe the drive and restore the system to the original factory
image. If it is under warranty, you may be able to request a
Windows XP disk, to allow you to repair the system. If it
is an older notebook remove any PCMCIA cards that are
installed (Modem,NIC) and retry booting.
