unable to automatically open additional windows in ie

I recently upgraded the system to Win XP, which came with ie 6.0.
In the new system, whenever I find a link which should open a new window
through a javascript, it simply doesn't work... ie, the new window flashes
open for a shortwhile, then immediately shuts down automatically.
Where have I to fiddle to fix this?

Do you have a popup blocker? Try to hold the shift or ctrl key while
clicking. If that doesn't work right click the link and click open in new
window.

Not sure... I have a button on the Google toolbar, which reads 'enable
(disable) popups for this site' however it doesn't seem to affect the
behaviour of the link to be opened: whatever I choose, enable or disable, it
still opens the link for a shortwhile (<1sec) and then closes it down
The same if I just try lowering the security barriers from within internet
options.

'opening it in a new window' is not feasible either, because it tries to
open an url corresponding to the java command (I get in the url box of the
new window something like
"javascript:window.open('http://www.site-to-be-opened','gallery','width=610,
height=390,scrollbars=no');void(0);").

Other suggestions? :)
