unable to assign administrator rights to

I have been trying unsuccessfully to install programs (any) onto my XP Pro
SP1 RU1 without any luck I have narrowed it down to a lack of administrative
privileges on my own account.
In the administrator tools/computer management/ local users and groups
accounts I am there, but under properties all I see is an icon but no
description of administrator rights etc to my account status.
I created a new account with administrator privileges but the same thing
occurs!
Any (helpful) suggestions please?

Is this your personal machine or is it a business machine.

You need administrator rights to assign them. I would guess one of
those other accounts has the administrator rights and you will need to sign
on as that user or find that user to sign on for you.

It is my personal machine Joseph and I used to have administrator rights
they just suddenly went!
