Unable to add local printer

I have an XP laptop with all updates. I can add network printers, however,
my nephew is taking the machine to college with him, and would like a local
printer. When I try to add a local printer attached to this computer,
unchecked p&p, select using following port LPT1, then instead of a list of
printers, there is a message in the box that says unable to find any drivers
for this device (and of course there is nothing listed). I replaced the
drivers.cab from another system that works (gives a list of printers), same
thing. Not sure where to go next, and I really don't want to
reinstall....does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

double check your cmos/bios settings. Most have an enable/disable lpt1.

But i'm curious, does your laptop "really" have a lpt port?
If you have an ancient printer with an lpt cable, you might want to get a
lpt to usb convertor cable. But printers with usb are pretty cheap
nowadays......
