Hi, can anyone give me some advice please:-

I have 5 computors on my cable LAN all running XP. The PC that is the
Internet gateway is giving problems, it does not see other computers
in it's workgroup, in fact when I try to "view workgoup computers"
from "my network places" it does not even recognise itself. I always
get the error message

"Home is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the Administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions.

The list of Servers for this Workgroup is not currently available"

I have been thru the setup jsut as on my other PCs which all
communicate OK. I did use the hard drive as a slave on another PC
after installing XP Home to transfer some large files, I thought at
the time this would be quicker than using the LAN but now I am
wondering if this may be the reason for the problem.

Many thanks

your clock is a day ahead if the rest of us :o)

if you have setup internet connection sharing then you will find that the
default domain has changed from WORKGROUP to MSHOME.

Setup each computer after setting up the pc with internet connection sharing
on it.

then make sure the default domain/workgroup has changed form WORKGROUP to
MSHOME

That should sort it out.

Cheers

Sascha

There are 3 kinds of networks: Microsoft Terminal Services, Microsoft
Windows Network and Web Client Network. Are you sure you are looking
at the right place (Microsoft windows network).?

I'm wondering if ICS is turned on on two computers, or if it was on elsewhere when enabled on this computer?

Gerard,

I am not sure if I am checking in all the right places, however when I
examine Properties of the Local Area Connection (status enabled) it shows
the Client For Microsoft Networks with a tick in the check box.

Thanks for the suggestion but I still need more help

Graham

David,
What is ICS ?

I'm wondering if ICS is turned on on two computers, or if it was on
elsewhere when enabled on this computer?

So yell at the OP instead of Gerard!

Do you have a firewall enabled on that system? That might cause some
issues.

I'd recomend buying a router (linksys, belkin, microsoft, etc...) to share
your internet connection. It's easier, protects your internal network,
makes it so you don't have to have a PC left on all the time, and much much
more...

Thanks David,

You are correct there would have been 2 PCs with internet connection enabled
simultaneously, but I re-run the wizard over all of the PCs many times
since, is it possible there some files that may be still be unchanged ?

This is really getting to me now, I am on the verge of formatting and
re-installing :-(

It may not be repairable. Never ever turn on ICS on two computers.

This will work if you network card requires a setup program to install. If it uses standard windows drivers i've not seen this work and know of no way around. But on MY network this did work (other admins have told me they had to reinstall XP on the machine where ICS was tuned on 2nd)

Delete the network card drivers and reinstall via the setup program. If windows detect the card and install drivers automatically then it doesn't work.

The ICS machine controls the network providing DHCP, DNS, etc. Turn two on and wierd stuff happens. The upshot is machione 2 can't use the network.

Special thanks to Mike and Dave,

There was a firewall issue with PC Cillin and I also re-installed the LAN
card and drivers, it seems to have done the trick. I owe you both a beer.

And who anointed you the moderator of this group? People will do as
