Trying to use the Groups and Users snap in for MMC, but the the message"
:Unable to Access the Local Computer. The error was: Invalid Syntax.
Related problem when I try to add directory persmissions:
When I right click on the directory to which I want to add permissions, I
get the following error message:
Cannot display objects from this location because of the following error:
Invalid Syntax.

Basically the security applets don't seem to recognize the computer name. Am
logged in as administrator. Win2000Pro Workstation SP4. All thelatest
updates (well as of a couple of days ago anyway) applied.

thanks

Look in Event Viewer to see if it shows any errors that may provide a clue. It
may be worth a try to boot into safe mode to see if that helps and if it does
you have a conflict with a startup program/service/driver. Otherwise I would try
using System File Checker as in sfc /scannow to check critical system files for
version, corruption, etc. Using sfc will may require the install cd. Otherwise
consider an inplace upgrade of Windows 2000 which should preserve your
applications and data but require you to first install the service pack and then
all critical updates. When you install updates or software in the future be sure
to disable virus protection and close applications including those shown as
loaded displaying icons in the lower right hand corner. Of course if you disable
your firewall, be sure you are not connected to the internet. --- Steve

require cdom and product key.

Hi

Maybe this will help.

The probem can be traced back to rassapi.dll - if you remove this file and
bypass Windows File Protection, you will receive the above errors.
