unable to access task manager

pam

when I hit control-alt-delete and then click on Task
Manager, the Task Manager window shows briefly and then
disappears. Thus I am unable to monitor or control any
running tasks or processes. Anybody have any idea why this
might have happened or what I can do to fix it?

Greetings --

The behavior you describe, which also often applies to
Regedit.exe, is typical behavior of more than one virus/worm, the
three below being the most common:

Bruce,

You were exactly on target. I tried running Regedit.exe
and it was similarly affected. I then scanned my system
with the online Panda ActiveScan and it found the Spybot
worm and cleaned it and now Task Manager and Regedit are
working again. I don't know why my AVG software, which I
had just used to clean the MyDoom worm, didn't find it,
but it seems that one needs to use multiple tools these
days.

Thanks much,
Pam
