Within the last few weeks I have lost the ability to access certain favorite web sites, I.e. Amazon, MLB.com, and Microsoft security section. I use XP and ie 6.0 and have not made any changes to either that I know of. Any ideas?

Are those sites https?

If so,
Try installing this patch:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=331906

I had a problem with the wininet.dll and this patch
updates that dll. To see if you need the patch, you can
check your version of wininet.dll located in your
Windows\System32 directory.

Expected Version: 6.0.2800.1136

The older version was like 6.0.2800.1106 or something,
its very close, but that last 2 or 3 digits are an older
rev.
