Ater installing last week's 4/11/2006 windows XP upgrade. I discovered that I
could no longer connect to the internet through my laptop on the wireless
network. I have four other computers on this network which are working fine
(all of which have NOT been upgraded).

I worked on this problem all day Saturday without solving it. In the course
of my investigation this is what I have discovered.

1. The laptop is seeing the network but can not connect.
2. The laptop can not get an IP address from the router.
3. If I enter a static IP address and ping the router I get an error 65
message. (I believe this is firewall)
4. I have all firewalls turned off.
5. If I boot the laptop into safe mode it connects to the internet fine
(this leads me to believe that I have all the network parameters setup OK}.
6. When I first boot up the Laptop the correct IP address is shown in the
network status window but I can not communicate with the network. If I punch
the "REPAIR" buttton. The Laptop can not get a new IP Address. This leads me
to believe that what is causing the problem is loaded after the original IP
address is received at boot up.
7. I have closed all startup programs with no effect.
8. I went in and closed all processes except those which function in safe
mode using task manager with no effect.
9. I have reset LSP/Winsock Layer and reset TCP/IP.

I am at my wits end. Can anyone help me? Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

Error 65 is often caused by a firewall program, such as Norton,
McAfee, or ZoneAlarm. The fact that your network connection works in
Safe mode but not in normal mode also points to a firewall program as
a possible cause of the problem.

I'd un-install (not just disable) any firewall program, reboot
normally, and see if the problem goes away.

The only Firewall installed on this computer is the Window's firewall (I
searched diligently) which I have disabled (can not figure out how to
uninstall it). The windows firewall does however refer to Zone Alarm which I
used on this computer up to a few months ago and then uninstalled. However I
can not find any remains of Zone Alarm on this computer except for the
Window's reference that the Zone Alarm firewall is turned off in a security
alert balloon. I wonder if I should reinstall Zone Alarm and then
reuninstall it. Maybe something was left behind during the uninstall that I
did not realize. Can Windows Firewall be uninstalled?

One other thing I just noticed is that I can access the LAN when I first
bootup the computer but not the internet. However, after I try to renew the
IP Address I can not connect to anything.

ZoneAlarm sometimes doesn't un-install completely, leaving bits of
itself behind. Here are two things to try:

1. Go to Start | Run | Msconfig, look on the Startup and Services
tabs, and un-check everything related to ZoneAlarm.

2. Re-install ZoneAlarm and then un-install it again.

I think I got it... I hope... It was the Zone Alarm and the TrueVector
After I rid the system of vsmon.exe everything seems to be working ok.

I sure hope so.

Thanks for your help Steve.
