Unable to access Microsoft, Hotmail or ebay websites

IE times out when trying to access Microsoft, Hotmaiil or Ebay web sites. All
other sites are OK as far as I can tell. I've tried changing or disabling the
Firewall (Norton) & security settings approaches, and loaded Java Runtime
Environment - all to no avail.
HELP!

Hi,

Without the exact error message, I'm not sure if this will help, but it
sounds like your timing out is, as you suspected, a configuration conflict.

Try the following two registry patches:

Set Menu Delay to 400
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/menudelay.reg
(For the possible DNS error)

Enable/Disable Show Hidden Files/Folders
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/showhiddenfiles.vbs
(Repairs loss of access to certain sites)

Alternatively, try the following:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?shdoclc

Please post in regards to your sucess or failure. In the event of a failure,
please include the specific error page you are seeing.

Best regards,

Altrus

Thanks for your response.
You ask for more information on the failure message. When I try these web
sites (any pages in them) IE attempts to connect for about 2 minutes, then
displays the usual failure page shown if you type an invalid address (i.e the
one headed "The page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is
currently unavailable. etc........ ", at the bottom of the page it says
"Cannot find server or DNS Error".)
I also connect via 750K Broadband.
I'd also, a day or so ago, scanned & fixed errors with Norton Antivirus,
A-squared, SpyBot and Registry Mechanic (all fully up to date).

As regards your 3 suggestions:
I didn't try the Menu delay, as I felt extending the delay beyond 2 minutes
IE currently waits was unlikely to help.
I tried your "Enable/Disable Show Hidden Files/Folders" patch, but this
made no difference at all.
I then downloaded the shdoclc package, unzipped it and stored it in
C:\Windows\System (not C:\Windows\System32), rebooted it and nothing has
happened - no scan or message or anything!! Still can't access the 3 websites.
Finally I tried downloading PC Mightly Max from the dll-files web site. It
found 14 errors, of medium importance and as it would cost $30 to enable the
"Fix" element, and I was far from sure it would help, I was unable to fix
these errors.
I'm grateful for your attempt. Have you any other ideas?

A further point. I've also tried uninstalling IE and re-installing it again
from the XP CD. No change!

Hi,

Does this only happen when you try to visit secure sites? Or can you log on
to othersites that have "https" before them?

Aside from the Java plugins, have you noticed anything common about the sites
you are unable to visit?

Do you use Macaffe Security Centre, or other similar Internet Security products?
When you referred to the Nortons Firewall, is that the firewall, or did you mean
Norton Internet Security in specific? Do you use anti-virus protection? If so,
what brand?

Some more links for your to consider, in light of the specifics:

**If it is limited to secure sites hosted by XP based machines**
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884488&Product=windowsxpsp2

Try the steps outlined in the following site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=813444

From the site - above, there is a section dealing with corrupt dlls.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following lines and press ENTER after each line:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Best regards,

Please post back regards the success or failures of what's presented.

Thanks!

Altrus

Just a thought, check your hosts file. Depending on version of Windows, it is
usually under Windows\System32\drivers\etc

The basic hosts file should have only the following (this is from Win XP).
If you see the sites you can't get to there, delete them. The Hosts file
holds precedence over the outside DNS, and can block access. Host file
tampering is usually from a virus or other malicious code. I don't know if
Norton checks for changes in that file.

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
