Unable to access internet after sleep mode

I have a laptop and desktop going thru a router and cable modem. Laptop has
XP Pro and desktop has XP Home. Laptop has no problem. When I boot up the
dektop I can get connected to the internet just fine. If I walk away and it
goes into sleep mode (or whatever mode), I can no longer get to the internet.
I have to restart my machine to get connected again (what a pain!!). I hope
it is some simple setting in IE6 that needs to be changed. Any Ideas?
Thanks.

X-post to WinXP Network_Web newsgroup.

Is the desktop machine fully patched at Windows Update?

If you connect directly to the modem (i.e., remove the router from the
equation) and the problem goes away, check for a firmware update for your
router.

Hi PA Bear and Rick,
The Most likely it is incompatibility in Power Management between the PC and
the Modem/Router.
When the PC goes to Sleep Mode (hibernation) the Modem/Router lose Power and
disconnect (lose signal), You need to
see if the Computer turning this Device OFF for Power saving Option in
Control panel Click on Power Options and make sure these
Options are set correctly:
System Standby = Set to Never
System Hibernates = Set To Never

Also in Device Manager make sure the NIC Under Power Management Tab that the
Computer not turning this Device OFF for Power saving.
To Do that Right click My Computer and select properties, then on System
properties click the Hardware Tab then Click Device Manager
and scroll down and expand ( by clicking the Plus + beside Network Adapters)
and Highlight the NIC and right click it and select Properties.
On NIC Properties click Power management Tab and make the proper changes.
Or as PA Bear mentioned Update the Firmware for the Router if not up2date.
HTH.
Let us know.
