When I try to opening existing web pages on my computer
that I want to update, I go to the website folder and when
I try to open the page or any page within this website the
following error message comes up:

Server error: The server extensions were unable to access
the file D:\folder\website\_vti_pvt\service.lck. Please
check the file permissions

What is the solution to this problem

Find the file using Windows Explorer, right click on it, select properties and
make sure "Read only" is unchecked.

is D:/ on your computer a hardrive or a CD?

yes?

now you sound like me when a waitress asks; do you want french fries or mashed potatoes...yes.

if it's a CD copy the contents to a folder on your HD, then change the properties to NOT Read-Only.

can't remember the rest of the problem

:-)

| yes

Although your answer to Crash's question is technically
correct, I don't believe that was what he was looking for.

Your D: drive is

a. a hard drive, or
b: a CD rom

Pick one and write back.

Did you try:

FTP to the site (or use Windows Explorer if this is a local web).
Change to the _vti_pvt directory.
Delete the service.lck file.
Log out, and try now.
