"un-clipping" a hard drive

I used a 60GB disk, clipped to 32GB (using the manuf.
jumper settings), in order to run Win98 in an old
PC/BIOS. Now, i want to use the full 60GB in a new PC
under XP.

I reset the jumpers to the "master" (unclipped)
positions, and used "Format C:" on the Win98 start up
floppy on my old machine, but it still formatted to 32GB.
I have installed the disk as a slave in my new PC, but XP
also recognises the disk as 32GB in "My Computer",
although in "System Information" it shows the disk as
60GB, with a 32GB partition size.

How can i realise the full 60GB?

Thanks

You also may need to do a full install, including
repartitioning and format.

Hi,

I would think that you have formatted the HDD in FAT32 which has a limition of 32GB.
Right click My Computer/Manage/Disk Management, you can format the rest of the free space to other partition.
Or you can delete the exisiting partition and format the slave drive to a single partition in NTFS format (around 57.8 GB)

Thanks for the reply. Do you really feel that the bios on
my new PC is unable to recognise a 60GB hard disk? I have
a 40GB disk installed already. I'm no expert and i'm a bit
nervous of doing this if i don't really have to, and i'd
be gratefull for any tips about how to etc.

Not true, you can have FAT32 partitions larger than 32Gb, it's just that XP
does not allow the creation of them, but the latest version of fdisk does.
Though of course if you are using XP you really would want to use an NTFS
partition instead of a FAT32 partition.

But I think the problem is that you're just formatting the partition, which
is not enough, you need to repartition your drive.

I did not realize that you had disks larger than 32GB already; I concur
with the other poster that suggested repartitioning the drive with a larger
partion. This will lose all the data unless you use a tool like partition
magic.

Yes, i ran compmgmt.msc and removed the partition which
was presumably the efect of the previous clipping. Then
restarted and reformatted. Many thanks.
