umax scanner stops working after SP4 install

I installed SP4 the other day, skipping over 2 and 3
hoping 4 would prove to be problem free. No other
software has been modified or installed.
Now, my umax scanner (astra 1220U) doesn't work.
This appears to be due to a changed, corrupted or removed
TWAIN_32 interface. The basic diagnostic test from
control panel checks ok, even after removing the hardware
and rebooting to let windows reinstall the scanner.
Hardware is not the problem, nor is the cable.
Any ideas on this one would be appreciated.

check to make sure Still Image Service hasn't been
disabled in your services if this happens to you...

Yes, and try reinstalling Vistascan if that doesn't work.
