Ultimate layered defence - overkill but works

I have downloaded the trial versions of several AV-products to find if
a complicated multilayered defence is possible without conflicts or
significant machine speed loss. The system which I found very safe and
problem free is certainly an overkill and would be expensive to buy,
but here it is:

-The main on access scanner continuously checking files and incoming
mails and doing scheduled system scans is NOD32 - a very light and
reliable program.

-My download manager starts after every downloaded file Kaspersky AV
4.5 scanner, which goes thorough the files and packets. It is normally
not running It does scheduled system scans too. I thing Kaspersky
needs no further praises, but the monitor is a little heavy for my
machine, NOD is much resource friendly, KAV is also using the script
checker with IE.

-An additional on access monitor is Panda Truprevent personal, that
checks started programs and processes and seems to check some network
activity too. It is doing it's job very transparent reacting only if I
try execute an eicar test.virus or a real one. It is planned to run
together with other AV-monitors, so there is no conflicts or
slowdowns. It is quite expensive and I don't know how necessary it is
in the real world.

-Kerio Winroute firewall includes a McAfee antivirus -plugin which
checks the net traffic including emails and interrupts for example the
downloads if the file is infected. Works fine and does not slowdown
network connections. Winroute is not the ultimate firewall and not the
ultimate Av-solution, it has been designed for some other purposes,
and it expensive but works as network antivirus very well.

-And finally my isp is checking my outgoing and incoming emails with
Vexira mailarmor, so most email-viruses are being blocked right there.

The most amazing thing is that all these programs work fine together
and my system is still faster than using Norton or KAV alone!
I am not going to purchase the programs (I have NOD32 license) and I
will uninstall them as the trial period goes out, because all this
armor is overkill. The main concern is turning away from viruses to
spyware etc. type malware, and I must find the ultimate solutions for
preventing it.

What's a layered defense? The buck stops with the person using the keyboard
and mouse. It doesn't stop anywhere else.

I forgot to mention myself in this list but with my curious nature I
am the weakest link.

This "test" was merely an attempt to resolve if all these defences
work together without bigger system slowdowns.

And my ISP uses SpamAssasin spam filter, I use additionally
Thunderbirds own heuristic filter, My main account has stayed spam
free this far,,, (no I don't tell you what my real address is...)

Yes, you can install of the software in the world for the layered defense,
but nothing can protect one from them self. ;-)

The ultimate solution is a twofold approach.

1) Ditch Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.
2) (And the most hardest it would seem) EXERCISE COMMON SENSE.

But there is always the change that somebody less cautious (like wife
and children) are using the machine. A funny "photo" etc from a friend
must be opened at once and there you go...

If you can, get them their own machine and help them when needed and
protect yours by isolation. There are no magic bullets.

Teach them. If they don't know and nobody shows them, how will they
learn?

This thread was originally about my skills and my machines security
but to tell about a test I made using several different kind antivirus
products simultaneously. And reasonable or not they seems to work very
well together.

My twins are 5 months old so their security is something quite
different than dealing with computer viruses :)
