I downloaded the Ultimate Boot Disc that PC World recommended, and now what
do I do? I burned it to CD, but nothing. So I downloaded again as an
self-executing. Still nothing. Should it boot my computer to run
diagnostics? I didn't know I was so dumb :(

Greetings --

What do the instructions provided by PC World tell you to do, in
order to use their utility?

The ultimate boot disk that I found at http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,8303,00.asp is for Windows 98 or Me.

It is not for use with XP.

What did you expect it to do?

Hi Judy,

If the Ultimate Boot Disc that you d/loaded is the one from the URL that
mrtee provided, then you have to first create the boot disk on a floppy
disk, then, to create an "Ultimate Boot CD" from it, you would need to first
create a Bootable CD and then copy the files from the "Ultimate Boot Floppy"
to the Bootable CD that you created.

If the Ultimate Boot Disc that you d/loaded is the Ultimate Boot CD, which
is d/loadable from here
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,23100,00.asp
then I'd suggest that you check your CD copying software's documentation for
instructions on how to burn an image file. For example, I am using Nero 6,
and to burn the d/loaded .iso file to CD, after opening Nero I would Cancel
the New Compilation dialogue box, then, from the top menu, go to
Recorder>Burn Image, then browse to the d/loaded .iso file. If you simply
burn the .iso file to CD, the files within are not expanded/extracted when
burned to CD.

Regards,

Absolutely nothing on use! It's like they think everyone knows what to do.
I thought I was the only one. It's just a utility boot disc to be able to
boot from CD and do some cleanup outside the system itself. I don't need it
right now, but thought it would be great to have in an emergency.

Whoops! I'm too used to XP that I think everybody is on it. Don't really
need it right now, but just was going to set it aside for the future when I
did have a system problem and could boot from CD and run some diagnostics.

The XP CD is bootable and has the Recovery Console built-in.
That Ultimate CD from PC World is just doing that sort of
software for W98/ME.
