UK Memory

Nik

Hi

I want to upgrade my memory, probably around £100 worth on top of what I
already have.

My PC is a P4 3.2 (prescott) on an ASUS P5GDC MoBo with 512MB DDR 400mhz
PC3200 RAM (Not overclocked, not interested in O/C memory!)

I don't know much about memory, but I do know it needs to match, and I need
to consider things like manufacturers, latency etc.

What I have already is this:- (From SiSandra)

Memory

Logical/Chipset 1 Memory Banks

Bank 0 : 256MB DDR-SDRAM 3.0-4-4-8CL 1CMD

Bank 4 : 256MB DDR-SDRAM 3.0-4-4-8CL 1CMD

Channels : 2

Speed : 2x 134MHz (268MHz data rate)

Width : 64-bit

Performance Acceleration Technology : No

Maximum Memory Bus Bandwidth : 4288MB/s (estimated)

Memory Module(s)

Memory Module 1 : Samsung M3 68L3223FTN-CCC F501652B 256MB 8x(32Mx8)
DDR-SDRAM PC3200U-333-6510 (CL3 up to 200MHz) (CL2.5 up to 167MHz)

Memory Module 3 : Samsung M3 68L3223FTN-CCC F508652A 256MB 8x(32Mx8)
DDR-SDRAM PC3200U-333-6510 (CL3 up to 200MHz) (CL2.5 up to 167MHz)

Mobo

Asus P5GDC Deluxe

Number of Memory Slots : 6

Maximum Installable Memory : 4GB

BANK0 - DIMM0 : Empty

BANK1 - DIMM1 : Manufacturer1 PartNum1 SerNum1 AssetTagNum1 DIMM Synchronous
SDRAM 256MB/64

BANK2 - DIMM2 : Empty

BANK3 - DIMM3 : Empty

BANK4 - DIMM4 : Manufacturer4 PartNum4 SerNum4 AssetTagNum4 DIMM Synchronous
SDRAM 256MB/64

BANK5 - DIMM5 : Empty

I would like to know where in the UK to buy (online) more memory, what make,
and what spec to go for. I really don't get the latency stuff and I just
want it to match what I have (Unless there is an outstanding deal on DDR2
which I believe this MoBo supports)

Also, which banks to put it in, and which "denominations" to buy, don't they
need to be in pairs to get the most from the DDR?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

TIA

Nik,

You might find this site @ Crucial quite helpful, in particular their Memory
Advisor Tool, it looks at your system and makes recommendations for you.

Thanks dfrog, I had seen that site, but I had hoped on getting something in
the UK, and some sort of "simple" directions about CL etc.

Any further advice gratefully recieved!

You should have taken a little more time to look at the site and do
some work :/
Anyway,

Thanks Shep, that was useful. Rude, but useful.

I've read all about the various types etc, and I've seen a module that I
would like to get. It's the same brand as my current DDR RAM (Samsung) and
the reference no. is almost exactly the same. SO am I right in assumaning
that there must be some advantage to keeping the modules as similar as
possible (I know about DDR working in pairs) so I have 2x256 Samsung
currently, and when I but eh next load I'll have 2x256 & 2x512MB, both
PC3200 DDR 400mhz Samsung memory. I hope I understand this!

DDR doesnt work in pairs. only memory i can think that does is EDO and RDRAM
(Rimms)

just keep all the DDR memory the same speed.

Nik,

I'm no expert, but I do believe that Crucial Technology are experts in the
field of PC memory.
Here's a cut from their UK site :-
Quote
Many DDR and all DDR2 desktops and motherboards have a built-in feature
called dual channel that allows you to utilize the bandwidth of two modules
at the same time. For these systems, you need to install modules in pairs
for maximum performance, so if you’re going to be adding 512MB of memory,
you are better off buying two 256MB modules, as opposed to one 512MB one.
Again, this information is noted in the Memory Advisor tool to help you get
the correct solution.
End Quote

At the end of the day you will choose what you see as the best advice
Good luck

Great, I knew I read somewhere that they should be bought in pairs for best
results!

I appreciate everyones' advice.
