UK cost of Vista - rip off!!

It varies from state to state and even city to city within a state.

Very roughly, the taxes ad from 0% (very, very few places) to about 9%
(probably New York, California and Massachusetts have the highest taxes
.... and, again, it varies from City to City as well). The national
average for sales taxes is probably about 6% to 6.5%.

I wondered what amount of tax gets added to goods.
In the UK it is 17.5%

That's interesting and I didn't know the VAT is included in the price. For
the other responses from Barry and Nina, the taxes they described are added
at the cash register, so my $1.99 soda becomes $2.15 (with an 8% sales tax).
But those are state/local specific sales taxes. I'm not aware of any national
tax added to the items before the sale and included in the marked price. But
as I've proven twice now, I'm no economist. :)

In my experience it's not just Microsoft. Most items are offered
initially at the highest price that can be got away with. I never buy
anything until the price drops significantly. What's the hurry?

Only one thing wrong with that scenario: Microsoft NEVER drops the price
of their OS's, even INsignificantly. Once they announce the price of their
newest OS, that price remains the same throughout its lifespan.

I thin I have seen somewhere that they are still charging the full retail
price for older versions of Windows, including Windows 95, and even WFW 3.11
and MS-DOS.
