Typing Glitches and Problems

HI

I use eBay a lot and when typing out the descriptions, sometimes things go
wrong!

When typing, I will occasionally look up at the screen to see what I have
written, only to find that half of what I have written has been deleted. Also
when typing, I find the cursor has shifted itself back to the beginning of
the sentence!!! It's driving me CRAZY!!!!!! Please help me if there are any
updates for Vista or if it is something I am doing wrong!

We need to know if you upgraded to Vista by installing on an older
computer or if this is on a computer that came with Vista preinstalled.
If the former, you probably neglected to install drivers for your
touchpad (if a laptop), video card, and/or mouse.

Since you didn't tell us anything about your computer, here is general
information about drivers:

Get drivers from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. I haven't used Belarc on a Vista machine so YMMV.

I may have the same problem you are having. It seems to only happen after
running for a long time and only in applications which use IE. Certain
characters stop working as if the keyboard is bad. ("c" and "t" are the
ones I mostly notice it with). If it was a hardware problem I would expect
that the work around I use of starting notepad/WordPad would not work so
well. It never happens when booted into XP (this machine is dual boot)

When you see the problem, try typing the alphabet. I can't type a "t" to
save my life, but I can type it into notepad every time and paste it in. A
reboot will fix the problem for a while. but closing and reopening IE will
not.

You would think that a driver issue would also not be application specific
but I guess it is possible. I am going to try plugging in an external USB
keyboard next time and prove that it does not help.

I have an HP pavilion zv6000 laptop. Running Vista Ultimate. English and
Spanish language packs installed. (I only run the English version however) .
Speech to text used at times (but not when seeing this problem) 1.25 GB ram.

I have Office 2007 and a assortment of other software installed including
Firefox. Details available upon request.

HP does support this model for vista upgrade. I am running with the
standard drivers from a clean Vista install with the exception of the
drivers for the internal flash card reader and modem. (these drivers were
loaded off of the XP CD.)

Great ideas, thanks a lot! Sorry as not to be more helpful! To help specify
it is a *new* ADVENT laptop, which therefore comes with Vista installed. I
did look up once, just in time enough to see all the writting I had done get
highlighted automatically and deleted in a split second! It may have been
because I was still typing it got deleted, but I never told it to
highlight... (including accidental pushing of ctrl A). I tried Ctrl Z but
nothing happened, and there is no bar to choose 'edit > undo' with Vista's
Internet Explorer. I think maybe it is a glitch in the program, which an
update might rectify. Please correct me if I'm wrong, as another problem I
was having was the page scrolling down an aweful lot when I didn't want it
to. I found out my palm would touch the mouse pad which would click off the
typing part and on a random space of the page, and by pressing space bar,
would knock it down!!! (if you understand what I mean). Thanks!!!!!!!

accidentally hitting the INSERT key will also turn overtype mode.
if you get the cursor in the wrong spot by touching the pad, you'll overtype
whatever is in front of where the cursor moved to.

Turn down the sensitivity of your touchpad from the Control Panel. You
may also have the option to turn off the touchpad while you are typing.
Refer to your laptop manual for that information. I do not think it is a
"glitch"; I think you need to play around with your touchpad settings
until you find the right ones that work for you.

I have ALL of these same issues and more with my new Gateway laptop that came
with Vista . Problem is I can't find anything within Control Panel that will
allow me to adjust the sensitivity of the touchpad. I did an extensive
search in HELP to try to find out where this feature is located. Some of the
keywords I used to search were: touchpad; sensitivity; touchpad sensitivity;
mouse sensitivity, etc. etc.. I came up with NOTHING! As a matter of
fact, it took me at least 10 minutes to type these 5 sentences due to the
cursor jumping all around this page, as well as jumping to other applications
that I have open. I don't know where else to look for help or a solution
(within their HELP and various forums, etc.). Hopefully I will be able to
find this forum again so I can check back for any more replies. When I
select the option "Notify me of replies" at bottom of the forum screen, I get
a reply message that says "Notification failed. Please try later." I have
tried again several times, only to keep getting the same response. This
sucks. What sucks even more is the fact that it takes an enormous amount of
my time to accomplish anything on this laptop that involves typing (ha ha
ha........that would be EVERYTHING!) due to the cursor jumping around, etc..
Oh, I forgot to mention that frequently a big portion of what I just typed
all of a sudden gets deleted. And sometimes the window I am typing in just
all of a sudden closes by itself, resulting in everything I've just typed
disappearing, nowhere to be found. So if there is any chance that the
problem is due to the touchpad being overly sensitive (rather than some other
problem causing all of this), I would REALLY appreciate it if someone would
instruct me as to EXACTLY where I should go within Control Panel to change
the sensitivity.

I experienced practically ALL the problems that you described below as
well... it's so frustrating! Just a small portion of the wrist touches the
touchpad and large portions get highlighted, deleted, and the cursor goes mad.

What I do now is to disable the touchpad whenever I type. There's a small
button in the middle of the top part of the touchpad... I just press it and
disable it whenever I need to type out documents in Word etc.

What brand - model laptop? Have you checked the maker's site for updated
drivers?
My Toshiba P205-6267 ran considerably better after I installed the
appropriate
updates for my system from Toshiba.

My laptop does not have a "button" on the touchpad as you described yours as
having. Do you know any other way that I can disable my touchpad, such as
through the Control Panel"???
