Typing erases following letters

If I want to move test to right, putting the curser in front of the text and
spacebar erases the following text instead of moving. Happens also if I
highlight test to change a letter, the following letter is erased. I know
this happened once before but don't remember, and can't find the section to
make the change.

You are in Overtype mode instead of Insert mode.
Double-click the OVR button in the status bar (the bottom of the window) or
press the Insert key on the keyboard once.
