Type1 fonts in XP

I've got a Type1 font family that I use on my home XP PC, but no matter what
I try I cant open them on my work XP PC, which sees them as .pfb and not
Type1 files. It tries to open them in Acrobat but fails. It's got me stumped.
Any ideas?
