Type of Windows 2000

I have a Windows computer. Is there a way to find out if it is a Windows
2000 server (if so, what type?) or Windows 2000 Professional? I typed
WINVER under Start, Run, it popped a window that said "Windows 2000". If I
clicked on Start, I do not see the Window logo. Thanks.

Sorry to interfere here but on my computer under Problem Devices I find
Intel(R) 915G/P/GV Processor to I/O Controller - 2580
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2580&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_00\3&11583659&D&00 28

Now that I have changed to a Power unit giving 500 Watt and no noise, I very
seldom get errors at startup but I have had one that gave 1 beep followed by 6
more. Intel (on the net) seem to think that I should try changing the processor
or the motherboard.

Does this information indicate something I might change to stop errors?
I should like to find one *OR* the other rather than both.

Borge in sunny Perth, Australia

Check your mobo manual for the meaning of the beep codes.

Thank you very much, Dave. Your command works. The server is a Windows
2000 Server (5.0.2195 SP4), Build 2195. For some reasons, my Device
Manager shows blank. I am afraid of rebooting the server. I noticed that
Windows patches are not up-to-date and the antivirus definition is not
up-to-date either. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
Thanks.

Make sure the 'Plug and Play' service is started.

Also check Event Viewer for errors. When you view the logged events in Event
Viewer (double-click them in the right-hand pane) in the upper right corner,
third button down is a copy to clipboard, then you can paste in the body of
a reply message.

Please do so for each of the different System Log events (that are a Type:
'Error' or 'Warning') since last boot so we can see all of the event detail.

You're welcome. Dave is helping you with your questions, follow his
advice, you're in good hands while he's helping you.

The questions about antivirus and Windows updates:

Antivirus definitions - consult your AV software vendor. I can't help
you with that because I simply don't know how the software package
applies its definition updates.

The Windows updates and patches. They will almost certainly require a
reboot. Defer them until you can schedule a planed maintenance
shutdown. What you can do is go the the update site and have the
updated engine identify the necessary updates then read up on them and
manually download and save to disk for latter installation the ones you
deem critical. You already know that anything can happen when you apply
updates, including the server not rebooting properly. Take appropriate
precautionary measures before you apply the patches. Make sure you have
a proper backup and restore strategy in case of problems.
