Two versions of Messenger ? Conflicting?

Hi

I have installed Messenger 6.2 the latest version.

However, I also can see Messenger 4.7.

When I look on Microsoft website in one place they say
6.2 is the latest version, in another 4.7 is the latest
version for XP Home.

Now 6.2 is launched when I launch messenger itself. But
if I open Internet Explorer it forces me to open 4.7....

If I click the menu Tools - > messenger in Explorer it
launches 4.7.

I can't find how to rid myself of the plague of 4.7.

Or how to tell the OS NOT to use 4.7.

I keep on getting messages from 4.7 trying to get through
my firewall.

When I start my PC 4.7 is used....

I have to manually launch 6.2 and then it tells

"you have been logged out of another location...."

(ie 4.7)

then I can run 6.2

4.7 does not appear in add/remove.

I can see it on my hardrive as it is in the folder

H:\Program Files\Messenger

whereas 6.2 is in the folder

H:\Program Files\MSN Messenger

Is it too much to ask that microsoft can control their
own folder naming process and have only 1 version of a
software for 1 OS system?!

Even only launching one version?

Or putting everything in Add/remove?

I am cheesed off and will prob have to remove 6.2 to get
rid of this headache unless someone has some sort of
answer!

At the moment I am going through registry and repointing
all the keys to MSN Messenger

Better work or its getting removed....

One is MSN Messenger (6.2), and the other is Windows Messenger (4.7) -- they are *separate
products*, they are not the same thing nor do they upgrade one another.

MSN Messenger is available for Windows 95 (an older version), 98, 2000, ME and *XP* and
Windows Messenger is available for Windows 2000 (a newer version) and *XP*.

Therefore, Windows XP can run both and as such, why you have the two folders and the various
other rants you have concluded in this post.

You'll just need to disable Windows Messenger. To disable Windows Messenger, open it up
(click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab
and uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows
starts' (depending on version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or
'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background' (depending on version). This won't remove
Windows Messenger, so features like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing
will continue to work, but it will let it stay out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

well, i have that problem and your "solution" doesn't
work because i don't have norton and it still runs in the
background and i keep unticking the "allow this program
to run in background" option and it still runs when i use
outlook or outlook express. WHY??

Rants?!

Well I had fully disabled 4.7 exactly as you stated
already.

I do have NAV, and have unchecked MSN Messenger -
but....this is for 6.1 as 4.7 is called Windows
Messenger

So why this should make 4.7 start up....

So not quite as obvious as you state. But from your post
would I be right in saying that 4.7 is all I need then
and no need in future to add MSN Messenger 6.2 even
though it has some nice extra features.

All my rant is about is some consistency and clear
product naming - and they are extremely similar down to
the menus etc and functionality. Even DLLs.

As i am wiping and reinstalling today would be nice to
know what you would recommend.
