Two "Software, Optional" updates not installed - Why?

R

RichardOnRails

Hi,

Microsoft Update identified four updates as appropriate to the current
state of my WinXP-Pro./SP2 system. After reviewing them, I selected
all four and directed that the updates be applied. After the update
complete, a window opened informing me::

The following updates were not installed
* Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: x86 (KB829019)
* Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB928416)

"Add or Remove Programs" indicates the following Microsoft .NET
Framework elements are installed:
* (English)
* 1.0 Hotfix
* 1.1
* 1.1 Hotfix
* 2.0 Beta 2
* SDK (English)

Why were the updates not installed?

Thanks in Advance,
Richard

Thanks, DB.

I my have posted prematurely. After I accepted Windows' announcement
about installation failure, I got another window with icons for the
failed items that had more info. I'll post back after I followed that
path to its completion.

Richard

Thanks for your excellent advice, Robear. I followed some of the
guidance of the sites your referenced. Thinks seem to go very well
until I tried MS Update. I may of had a failure because I was running
Firefox while I was running Update in IE7. I'll try again later today
without running other apps while updating.

Just for the record, here's what I did and experienced:

* Uninstalled entire .Net Framework
* Ran WindowsInstallCleanup(MSICUU2.exe)
* Ran MaxRegistryCleaner.exe
o Closed all running apps
o Automatically backed up Registry
* Ran Microsoft Update in IE7 with Custom option: Got 3 Software,
Optional MS .Net Frmwk items:
o Ver. 1.1
o 2.0 x86
o 3.0 x86
* Update failed:
o Downloading Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 (update 1 of 3)...
done!
o Downloading Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: x86 (KB829019) (update 2
of 3)... done!
o Downloading Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB928416) (update 3
of 3)... done!
o Initializing installation... done!
o Installing Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 (update 1 of 3)...
failed!
o Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: x86 (KB829019) (update 2 of
3)...Canceled
o Canceling updates...

Again, thanks for sharing your Microsoft wisdom,

Best wishes,
Richard

YW.

I followed some of the guidance of the sites your referenced.

Why only some of it (unless you meant that you only used KB932100)?
I was running Firefox while I was running Update in IE7.

You /must/ use IE to update via Windows Update website.

Is Automatic Updates enabled?
* Ran MaxRegistryCleaner.exe
o Closed all running apps
o Automatically backed up Registry

Does that mean you backed-up the Registry prior to running
MaxRegistryCleaner? If a Registry cleaner doesn't automatically make
back-ups of the changes being made (or prompts you to do so...and you do
so), steer clear of it. In fact, it might be a good idea to steer clear of
all Registry cleaners: Your use of MaxRegistryCleaner may be why these
updates are failing. Read http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw
your own conclusions.

If you followed the instructions in KB923100, you should have manually
downloaded/installed the .NET Framework versions you originally had
installed. Then Windows Update/Automatic Updates should have offered you
appropriate Service Packs and Hotfixes for them.

Please post about any additional Windows Update problems in the Windows
Update-specific newsgroup: microsoft.public.windowsupdate.

PS: .NET Framework v2 and .NET Framework v2 SP1 were released years ago.
Why did you still have a .NET Framework v2 beta build installed?

Hi Robear,

I'm replying here simply to respond to your questions on this thread.
In the future I will use the update NG. First off, update has been
successful. At least, I've got:
- 1.1
- 2.0 SP1
- 3.0
I thought I'd have 3.5 recommended/installed also, but it wasn't
recommended by Update. I'll probable get that when I install some app
that requires it.

Since my problem is solved, there's no need for you to read further.
Out of respect for the fact you provided me with a number of
instructive questions, I have listed them below, along with my
responses.

Again, thank for offering me your guidance. It is much appreciated.

Best wishes,
Richard

Yes, I only used 935100.
You /must/ use IE to update via Windows Update website.
I was using Update under IE7. I was running Firefox in another
window.

No, MaxRegCl offers that as a start-up option and I elected it.

Read http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw
your own conclusions.
I will.

I didn't read far enough to learn that. I'll follow up on it

I don't know ... but I don't have it anymore :)

In future, RTFM in its entirety before acting! <eg>
