Two screens?

Hi all,

I have an XPH machine based on an Intel D915GUX
motherboard. The video at present is running off the
motherboard. I need to add another screen for more
desktop space. If I put an AGP card in the slot, can
I run two screens at the same time? Will the fact of
insertion automaticlly shut down the video subsystem
on the motherboard? If the shutdown of the motherboard
video happens, can I overcome this by using two video
cards (an AGP and a PCI)? Will Windows XP Home
automatically handle multiple screens? Will the multiple
video drivers install automatically if provided?

You need to read your Motherboard manual. Most of the time putting another
video card in will do nothing "automatic" in any way. You have to manually
disable the on-board video if that is your desire. Otherwise - if the
system can do it - you can put in a PCI/AGP video card and do two-three
monitors (depending on the video card you choose. And if you need to
disable the on-board for the PCI/AGP card to function - so be it and buy a
dual-capable video card - most good ones can do that these days .

When you hook it up - look in the display properties control panel - you'll
find the rest of your answers there.

These are really all hardware questions, not anything to do with Windows XP.

For the video built into the motherboard, check the documentation that came
with the computer: might be a printed manual, or maybe a file on a CD-ROM
that came with the system. If you can't find the information there, check
the computer manufacturer's web site, contact their tech support, or try a
newsgroup specifically for your computer brand. You also might want to
check the manufacturer's web site to see if they have web forums for their
users to discuss technical matters.

As far as an add-on video board, that depends on what you buy. Some come
with built-in support for multiple monitors, some don't. Check what you're
buying and read the documentation that comes with it and the information
available on the video board manufacturer's web site.
