Not familiar with edimax, but I take it that this is a combo DSL modem/NAT
router device. Unless this device does not provide DHCP, I don't know why
it would be preferable to have the Linksys do so. The problem you are most
likely to encounter is that some low end routers will only allow you to have
DHCP give out the router's IP as a default gateway address. You will have
to consult the Linksys manual to see if it has such a limitation. If it
does, then you would have to connect the Linksys WAN/Internet port to the
edimax LAN port. This can usually be made to work, but it creates a double
NAT situation which .......... well, sometimes doesn't work well or at all.

If the Linksys DHCP service can provide the LAN IP address of the edimax as
default gateway, or you decide to use the edimax for DHCP instead; then you
could simply connect an edimax LAN port to a Linksys LAN port and not use
the Linksys WAN/Internet port at all.

If I am following this correctly, here is my 2¢ worth...

Check to see if your DSL modem setup has provisions to make it act as a
'bridge'. If so, do it (after jotting down your PPOE login information). The
DSL modem will now only act as a DSL/Ethernet translator. It will no longer
be able to set up the Internet connection on its own.

Then change the Linksys router to handle the PPOE login and dynamic IP on
the WAN side, and provide NAT/firewall/DHCP services on the LAN side.

Works slick and avoids all the problems associated with NAT behind NAT.
