Using XP Home on HP Laptop
History: Checked and ran Symantec and Kelly fix for the worm because I had
a shutdown that was symptomatic (60 second counter, etc.). Interestingly, I
was patched already and had this shutdown behavior. Found no sign of worm.
Had to turn off System Restore to run Symantec fix.
Now, cannot run a restore or set a point -- upon bringing up System Restore
I get --"System Restore is unable to restore your computer at this time"
and cannot turn System Restore off from system panel --Error message says
"System restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more
drives. Please restart your computer and try again." -- Trying again results
in same. Error message in Event viewer when attempting shut down at the
panel says "The System Restore Service terminated with the following error:
Data error (cyclic redundancy check". I did shut it down at services and
rebooted, but hard drive still using up the same amount of space (which I
think should not be the case if it's actually off, correct?). I have
purchased Go Back and want to install it, but want to make sure Sys Restore
is truly disabled first.
Second problem has to do with the fact that my event viewer shows a bad
block on my HD (noticed this in all the fuss) -- cannot run a scan on the
disk with either (or none) of the options checked.
Any and all help sincerely appreciated.
