Two problems after IE8 install

C

Clair Da Loon

Yes... I have already been to the internet explorer newsgroup, but after
trying all he could suggest, P.A. Bear sent me here!

After installing IE8 on Windows XP Pro sp3, I developed the following two
problems:

1. I now have four sets each of "Network Setup Wizard" and "Wireless
Network Setup Wizard" icons in my Control Panel. When I tried uninstalling
IE 8, both with the control panel and the "Fix This" applet provided by MS,
I still had three of each.

2. "Help and Support" on the Start Menu will open/run, but when I attempt
a search, or click on most any link in the window, then the window below
the search bar goes blank and then freezes. I have to use Task Manager to
shut it down.

Thanks to any who can offer some helpful suggestions for a couple of cures!

pabear is usually pretty
good about these things.

however, these issues can be
very complicated and
compounded by sp3 and
notorious anti virals.

my suggestion is to
simply uninstall sp3
via add remove programs
and uninstall your antivirals
too.

the uninstall of sp3 will revive
the sp2 system files you had,
and hopefully your system
will be ok.

if so, then make a system
restore point and reinstall
ie8.

if ie8 works and your control
panel is still normal, then you
might try sp3 again.

if however, you uninstall sp3
and your system is still not
perfect under sp2,

then you can use you sp2
windows cd to perform a
repair install.

remember to uninstall the
anti virals, third party firewalls,
etc as they will inhibit the attempt
of returning your system to sp2
and the repair installation, if needed.

The part about the original post you got right, but the "Mme" you got
wrong. My middle name is Clair and I'm male, but no offense taken. My
first name is even more gender ambiguous than my middle, so I have gotten
used to such errors. By the way, "Claire de Lune", which I mangled to
create my pen name, is actually a classic piece of music by Claude Debussy.

I don't have the uninstall option available for SP3 in the Control Panel
applet. I think a disk cleanup unitlity erased the backup. What now?

Is it safe to assume you tried running System Restore (as PA Bear
suggested in his last post)?

Yes. All system restore points failed. By the way, System Restore and I
have it out for each other... it only works when I test it to see if it
works, but when it has to haul my bacon out of th fire, it AWAYS fails!
Bad luck or conspiracy?

System Restore failure is common when you also run programs like Zone
Alarm or Norton. See this page:

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

Have you tried running System Restore in Safe Mode?

If you *really* want to make sure your bacon is saved, I recommend
regularly imaging your hard drive with a program like Acronis True
Image.

I usually do a Norton Ghost of the system after a fresh install, but I
neglected that after the last one. My Data is always safe though. I keep
it on a separate drive partiton from the system files and then run Karen's
Replicator every 15 minutes to a second hard drive, which gets swapped with
another drive on a monthly basis.

I looked at your link, and after trying a number of the sugestions that
seemed applicable in my case, I am now left with two options.. a repair
install or a format and reinstall. I have complaints about repair
installs, too. They never repair anything, so I have gave up on them a
long time ago. I routinely go straight to the format and reinstall routine.

Well, I guess I'll be back online in a week or so depending on how
dependable my dialup decides to be.

That's good news. However, regularly imaging your hard drive is even
better. Had you done this before installing IE8, you could merely
restore that image and all would be well.

Ah, but you didn't answer my question! Did you try System Restore in
Safe Mode?

And which particular things did you try?
a repair install or a format and reinstall.

This is why I recommend regularly imaging the hard drive. :)

In order to perform a Repair Install, it's important you revert to IE6.
Ideally, you should also revert to the Service Pack level on the
installation CD. See:

Last question: Did you have IE6 or IE7 when you applied SP3?

based on the othe
responses, since
you don't have any
restore points,

I would suggest
to follow my advice
and uninstall sp3.
