I have a 80GB hard drive partitioned into 55gb and 25gb. I would like
to run XP on the 55gb partition and ME on the 25gb partition. My ME is
a full program but my XP is only the upgrade so I loaded ME first on
the 55gb partition,( C: drive ) and then I loaded my XP upgrade on the
ME program. Now I have XP on the 55gb portion but I cannot find a way
to get ME on the 25gb partition, ( D: drive ) Am I trying to do
something that cannot be done?

Uh......why would you even think about keeping ME ? Unless of course there
is some slow hardware issues, I don't see it.

Since you have only an upgrade version of Windows XP,
you can no longer install Windows ME separately since the
Windows ME license formed the basis for using the upgrade
version of Windows XP.

Please read your EULA for Windows XP:

Go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

8. UPGRADES.
To use Software identified as an upgrade, you must first
be licensed for the software identified by Microsoft as
eligible for the upgrade. After upgrading, you may no
longer use the software that formed the basis for your
upgrade eligibility.

How often are you wanting to boot to ME?
You need a boot manager or use a floppy when you want to boot ME.
Is the 55 GB NTFS?

First partition your hard drive in three partitions, two FAT32 and one
NTFS, making sure that the first one, C, is FAT32 and the second one, D,
NTFS and the third one FAT 32.

Install ME onto C

Install XP onto D and use the ME CD to verify the upgrade when asked by XP.

Ignore Carey Frisch.

Done.

I believe the EULA section you quoted below would be interpreted to mean "at
the same time", in this case. IOW, since we are only talking about 1 user on
1 machine capable of only 1 OS session at 1 time, there is no problem with
complying with the EULA. This is the equivalent of continually reloading the
same machine with different software, over and over again by the same
licensed user. No foul, I say. My opinion is that if you were to contact a
MS licensing rep he would tell you the same, in this case. And one can
contact them easily enough. Just visit the MS licensing web site and give
one a call or email.

There was no need to install Windows ME in order to install Windows XP.
What you want to do is possible but it will most likely be easier for
you if you use a third party boot manager. Windows ME will not want to
install on the non active D partition, the partition will have to be
flagged as "Active" before you can proceed. If the Windows XP
installation is on an NTFS partition it makes things easier to do in a
scenario like yours, it also makes it easily possible to do without a
third party boot manager.

Never tried this with ME, so hopefully this works for you. You need to
install ME on 25gb partition first. Then insert your XP upgrade CD and
boot off of that to install XP on the 55gb partition. When it prompts
you to insert the upgrade media, put in the ME CD. The rule of thumb is
to always install older versions of windows first, then newer versions
of windows, then non-windows OSes when it comes to multi-booting. Good
luck.

clacker:
Try this...

1. Install XP on your first partition - the 55 GB one. That partition must
be formatted FAT32. I assume you have no problem with a FAT32 partition. The
advantage here is that XP will be installed on the C: partition where
presumably you would want it. By & by (I would guess) you're probably going
to delete the Me installation from your HDD. At that later time you could,
should you desire, convert the FAT32 partition to NTFS, ditto for the second
partition. But for now that first partition must be formatted FAT32.

When you install XP on that first partition you will need your Me CD to
effect the XP install since you're using an XP upgrade installation CD.
(Make sure you select the "Leave the current file system intact (no
changes)" option during the install process.)

2. Now install Me on the second partition - the 25 GB one. To do so, you
must follow the instructions provided on Doug Knox's site -
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_9x.htm
Presumably you'll be installing Me on the D: partition. Name it WINME.

Begin by either creating the READ.SCR file as instructed by Doug or download
that file (he has a link to it) and save that file to your Win Me Startup
floppy disk.

3. Following the Me install and after booting into the Me OS, boot from your
XP installation CD and select the Repair option to get into the Recovery
console. Follow Doug's instructions re invoking the FIXBOOT command.

If all goes well, you should get a menu upon bootup where you can select
which OS to boot into.

The reason I say "if all goes well" is that, for one reason or another, this
multi-boot
process sometimes just doesn't work. But it's worth a try.

Failing that, you could use a third-party boot manager as has been
suggested.

Not often, my wife uses a program called "Carbon Copy" about once a
month. This program will not run under XP.

CC for DOS or CC for Windows. I had used the DOS version back in the mid-
nineties.

Have you tried to run CC.exe in compatibility mode ?

Thanks to all for your suggestions. While reviewing same, a co-worker
walked me thru the whole process and it turned out to be soooo simple.
