I reinstalled Windows XP from a new XP Home CD, since I
lost my restore CD. I erased everything on my Hard Drive,
and everything went in fine, but I have two problems. At
boot up it gives me a choice to boot into "Windows XP
Home" or "Windows Whistler Personal". I also can't
download the updates off the Windows Update site. I can
view them and select them, but as soon as it starts to
download, it shows everything in red, and says that the
updates failed.

Greetings --

Despite what you may have been told, you did not use a "new WinXP
Home CD." "Windows Whistler Personal" is a very early, pre-release
test version of WinXP Home. It's not a valid RTM WinXP Home version,
and it cannot be updated via WindowsUpdate. If you were sold this CD
by someone who represented it as a valid WinXP Home installation CD,
you should contact your local law enforcement agencies; you've been
defrauded.

You'll need to replace it with a valid WinXP Home license, either
by buying a legitimate retail copy, or by contacting the PC's
manufacturer and obtaining a replacement Recovery CD.

I think the CD is genuine. It says Windows XP right on
it, and it has the fancy shiny label. But I still had my
old Product ID and so I used that one. I was told that
one was activated by my computer so I should use it
again. Would using the old Product ID do this?

Greetings --

To verify the "bona fides" of the CD for sure, check here:

You really should use the Product Key that came with the new CD.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of
CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are
purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for
any retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and
vice versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full
version CD, and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to
install a retail product. An Italian Product Key will not work with
an English CD.

Bottom line: Product Keys and CDs cannot be mixed & matched.
