Two Mouses on one PC

I don't think that Microsoft is going to response anytime but I will still
suggest that they should improve on this one.

This is a thread copied from Microsoft Windwos XP Newsgroup.

Hello,

i have this problem :

we have 2 Microsoft mouses (explorer 3.0 and intellimouse optical) connected
to the same computer. One mouse is ambidextrous which is used by our
lefthanded users, and one is right handed mouse used by righthanded users.
The problem is how can i switch the primary mouse buttons for the lefthanded
mouse without affecting the righthanded mouse?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to my knowledge, the only solution for this time is to create
seprate user profiles and set the mouse buttons seprately for each mouse.

Let me know your views.

It looks like you can't do this, as Control Panel | Mouse doesn't allow for
the independent control of the mice.

However, here's an easy workaround.

Under this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse

is the setting:

"SwapMouseButtons"

Default is zero which means no.

Setting to 1 means yes.

So if you make a backup of the registry key, then you can make a backup with
each value and when you need to switch, click on the registry file to change
the key to right or left.

I don't know what kind of permissions you would need in Vista to do this,
but in XP it should be very easy to implement.

Don't you think that I did try that Registry Entry before posting a
suggestion to Microsoft. It doesn't work. In Windows XP, it only allow to
change the Mouse Button settings through Mouse applet. Changing the value
direcly into the Registry from 0 to 1 doesn't make any difference. You should
try it.

It was not original my suggestion. Someone was asking in Windows XP NG that
he has 2 different Microsoft Mouses. One is used by Left Handed Persons and
another one is for Right Handed. He wants to set the Mouse settings different
for each mouse. My suggestions was: Vista should have the ability to store
the Mouse settings for each and every mouse plugged in and out. Suppose! if I
plug my first mouse and change the settings to Left handed and then I remove
the first one and plug in the second one and change the second to right
handed, in future Vista should always detect that which mouse is plugged and
change the settings accordingly.

Hope you understand, what I mean and you should try that Registry key before
writing here.

I will highly appreciate more views.

Microsoft does not monitor these public newsgroups for suggestions. You
submit suggestions to Microsoft at (e-mail address removed). These ng's are
peer-to-peer self help groups. The ng's are hosted by Microsoft as a public
service.

that you
change the value 1000 to 3000 and 123 to 500

Why not just get a cordless mouse? I'm left-handed and I got one for myself
but it has been nice for right-handed users of my PC since they don't have
to fight moving the cable any more to get it to the right.

It was a suggestion for you to try. I don't have the issue, so I didn't
know if it would work or not.

Looks like you found a different workaround that did work though.

cheers,
