Two inputs into 1 monitor - is it possible?

Hi

Does anyone know how to safely run the output from 2 PCs (or games console)
into one TFT monitor.
I have one with VGA and DVI inputs. I realise you can unplug one cable or
make sure one PC is off but what would happen if both PCs were feeding into
the monitor?
I can find plenty of splitters to feed one output to multiple monitors but
not the reverse. I guess what I want is just a simple failsafe
manual/auto switching arrangement.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Google KVM

One example follows. Others are cheaper, if you want to use VGA
connectors.

What monitor do you have? On my Viewsonic LCD monitor (VX2025wm), it has
the two inputs you mention. There's actually a button on the front that
allows me to switch between the two inputs, and I've used it this way when
I'm working on my laptop, but want to keep my desktop hooked up still.

I use it this way for occasional use, but if I was switching regularly, I
would get a KVM switch.

That depends on your monitor. Some monitors allows you to switch
between inputs.

Newegg has a good KVM switch for only $19.99 delivered (as of now).
