Two DHCP servers on same subnet

SBS 2000 server acting as DHCP server. File server is a DC. Installed DHCP
on the file server and created a new scope that did not clash with the
existing scope on the SBS - in order to create 50 -50 redundancy.

DHCP service on the file server would not start, even after being
authorized. Not only that but the DHCP service on the SBS server stopped as
well. First it stopped then it dissapeared altogether! On the right hand
pane in the DHCP console the error was the DHCP server that you have
specified could not be found.

So I had no DHCP on the network.

This was not an authorisation issue, both servers appeared in the list of
authorised servers.

I unauthroized the SBS DHCP server through the file server DCHP console. The
file server DHCP crashed. After logging out and in the file server DHCP came
up. The SBS DHCP is now not authorized and according to the SBS server does
not even exist.

Any ideas why my network is allergic to two DHCP servers?

TIA

If SBS sees another DHCP-server, it will shut down its own. You only need
one DHCP-server and let SBS handle that.

SBS isn't happy about servicing DHCP requests in a timely manner due to the
load that Exchange 2000 places on it.

Is this a limitation of SBS? How do we create DHCP redundancy in this
situation?

Thanks,

eddiec :)

Excuse me? I have never had any problems whatsoever with SBS serving DHCP.
