Tweaking screen resolutions

If you right-click on a desktop program icon, select Properties, click
the Compatibility tab, there is an option under 'Display settings'
to......"Run in 640x480 screen resolution."

Is it somehow possible to change that to 800x600 resolution? Either via
freeware or a registry tweak?

I have a 19" LCD monitor that I would like to give to my mother
someday. The optimum resolution is 1280x1024 pixels. However, she likes to
play PartyPoker, and the only resolution that looks good with that program
(in her opinion) is 800x600. If you increase the resolution any higher, the
text is hard to read. I've checked PartyPoker's game settings, and do not
see any option to increase the graphic or text size.

Why not just use the video card settings to put it to 800 x ...?

I doubt it.

The Compatibility tab is intended for running old MS-DOS programs. It fools
the old programs into thinking that they are running on Windows 95, 98,
Me,NT 4.0 or 2000.

Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution...
[[Adjusts the screen resolution to 640 x 480 pixels while this program is
running. When you close the program, the screen resolution setting will
switch back to your default setting.]]

There are free utilitues that allow you to change screen resolution on the
fly. Maybe one of those would be easier fro you Mother than right clicking
the Desktop, clicking Properties, clicking the Settings tab and moving the
Screen resolution slider.

You can set Apply the new display settings without restarting option by...
Right click Desktop | Properties | Settings tab |
Advanced button | General tab |
Apply the new display settings without restarting

Apply the new display settings without restarting
[[Specifies that your computer should apply changes to system display
settings without restarting.
Some programs might not display colors correctly without being restarted
after you make changes. If this happens, close and then reopen the program
after you change color settings.]]

Can you use the magnifying glass (magnify.exe if I recall correctly)?
I'm not quite ready for it yet, so I'm not sure of my ground here.

You can use a scripting language like VBScript or even AutoIT to have
your mother run instead of the PartyPoker Executable that first
changes the resolution and then runs the executable.

So, write a script and end it to him.

This monitor I'm using is connected via DVI cables. Perhaps that extra
sharpness would compensate for the smaller size text and graphics at the
1280x1024 resolution. I could also enable ClearType, although I'm not a big
fan of it. Or better yet, perhaps by the time I'm ready to give my mother
this monitor, she will tire of PartyPoker. Although I doubt it.

If you have a nVedia video card, then the utility program of it
provides such thing (when u install its driver from the disk). if you
right click on ur desktop and then (NVEDIA Display) or something like
it.....
if you dig around for a while you'll see that u can customise a
specific application to run in a certain resolution.
and that's it.
