Tweaking MTU

G

Gordon

I've run PC Pitstop and it's advised me to add the MTU registry key to
optimize my network speed. The key its says to add is in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\[Adapter
ID]. When I go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\
I see THREE different adapter IDs. How do I know which is the correct one? I
am running a Toshiba Tecra 9000 wirelessly, but it also has an NIC as well
which is not used.

Thanks!

Gordon,

You have to be careful tweaking the MTU as you may lose Internet connection.

The adapter your application is talking about is the one used to access the
Internet

I would contact the ISP & ask them what it is before messing with the value

Hi Gordon,

If you want to experiment with MTU, and a few other settings, try going to :

http://www.dslreports.com/tools

Take the "Tweak Test". It will report back what it finds, and also allow
you to download and use Dr.TCP, which allows you to vary MTU, etc. through a
GUI, rather than doing a Registry hack directly. Be sure to read thoroughly
before doing any kind of "tweaking", not matter how "safe".
