TV Media: how to remove

B

B J W

I am hoping someone can point me to manual instructions for killing this
horror, which is the TV Media adware application.

I know Microsoft put up a TV Media removal tool and a patch to Windows XP,
to overcome some serious problems TV Media posed to SP2 installation.

A friend had a bad experience with SP2 installation. I managed, with
Microsoft's KB instructions, to get TV Media off of his computer long enough
to get SP2 installed and functioning properly.

But, TV Media keeps coming back.

This what the Total Velocity webpage says about TV Media:

"Users can stop receiving ads from T.V. Media by going to Add or Remove
Programs located in the Control Panel and uninstalling all T.V. Media
supported products. Then, uninstall T.V. Media. T.V. Media will become
inactive and remove itself from your computer once it verifies correct
un-installation. This process will not affect your browsing and no further
action is required from you. Shortly after all T.V. Media supported
applications are removed and the T.V. Media application is removed, the
application will uninstall itself. "

What I get out of the above is that there is some kind of daemon, which will
not allow TV Media uninstallation to complete. The computer does not have
installed either of the applications mentioned on the Total Velocity
website, which require TV Media.

Microsoft TV Media removal tool doesn't even notice that TV media is
installed. Spybot and Ad Aware find it, but even in Safe Mode, they do not
seem able to root the bugger out, though I will try the route again.

I am hoping someone can point me to manual instructions for killing the
bugger.

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (personal free version)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Dowload the signature files (pattern files) by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt192.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adware with the latest definitions.
3) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) If you are using WinME or WinXP,Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point
10) Please report back your results

Hi Malke,

I've seen this "my bad" phrase around for a while. Being an old dinosaur I
don't know what it means. Now asking, "What's it mean?"

Hi,

End the process via the Task Manager, remove it from Add or Remove, uncheck
it from Start/Run/Msconfig - and/or remove the runkey.

Depending on the steps you follow, you will see it re-appear. So follow the
above. TVMedia is generally under Local_Machine, but check both and delete
it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

It will also be listed under Windows, System or System32, once you rename
it, you will be-able to delete it. Again, the process has to be ended
first. And it will also be listed here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software or:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

Once done, run this combo (even though you stated you already have) and all
will be well.

Run Ad-Aware, Spybot and HijackThis:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Note: Update each program, once installed, before running.

Note2: To avoid the False-Flag for the DSO Exploit (W3), open
Spybot/Advanced Mode/Settings/Ignore Products. On the All Products Tab,
scrol to DSO Exploit and check that item only. Randy (silj)

Good luck!

Hi Kelly,

Yes, you are one I have seen using this term. ;-)

I like to be comically correct.
