when i type a "1." or any such character and press ctrl+m after, the
previously typed text indents. Is there any way to prevent this?

It doesn't matter what you type first, Ctrl+M is the keyboard shortcut for
Indent. Yes it can be changed, but what are you expecting the keystroke to do
instead?

What do you expect to happen? Ctrl+M is the shortcut for indenting. Perhaps
you meant to use Ctrl+T or Tab?
